I know that most of you are only familiar with Camille Saint-saen's second piano concerto... the one in G minor. But recently, I took an interest in all of his piano concertos, and I found out that his other piano concertos weren't half as bad. I even thought they were great masterpieces that have been, unfortunately, neglected over the years...

Now, I don't think that no. 2 is the most difficult of the 5... or even the most beautiful to say the least. Can anyone please arrange the 5 piano concertos according to difficulty. And if you may, also arrange the 5 concertos according to their artistic beauty (the later is highly subjective, and I do appreciate your opinions.)

Thank you soo much!

Maurice Hinson devotes a paragraph to each one in Music for Piano and Orchestra. Though he doesn't rank them by difficulty, he regards the third as the most challenging.

The entire book is available online at the IU Press website at no cost to anyone who registers an account there. They offer full-text access to a number of other important titles in their catalog, too.

If based on the score, yes indeed. No. 3 is the most challenging.

Now, which one;s the most beautiful?

I have always loved the 4th. It's a truly beautiful, majestic piece and I sure wish it would be programmed more often. It's seems like the 2nd is the only one that is ever performed (and maybe the 5th on rare occasion).

Beauty is, according to the old saw, in the eye of the beholder. Which one I think is most beautiful - and I'm not sure I'd even tread down that path - may not coincide with what others consider beautiful. Is it really a pertinent question? Or, rather, isn't that decision one you should make for yourself dependent upon your own criteria of "musical beauty"?

Regards,
