Dear all

My newly acquired Steinway Model A2 (1959)is settling in nicely, and it is time to get the tech out to come and assess the instrument properly.

The instrument sounds very good - especially the tenor and treble register. As previously mentioned, new renners was fitted 10 years ago, as well as rollers.

However, where the break is in the bass, (E2 - Bflat3)it sounds thin and not balanced at all. From B3 everything improves again, and the instrument is well balanced. I have noticed that the strings in that section (wound brass) seems thinner than the other bi-chord strings (xcuse the terminology)lower down, ie, from Eflat downwards.

This is the only problem I am experiencing with the sound, apart from some very neccessary voicing and regulation.

How can this problem be overcome? Will a thicker gauge wound string do it? Or is it simply voicing that is at fault here? I know that this break can be troublesome.

Your advice will be appreciated

Kindest

Deon

I had similar problem. I acquired 1976 Steinway B a year ago and found that tricord notes at the tenor break to be really weak. I had the piano fully regulated and voiced. The problem was going away, but slowly. It took several months to be 'perfect'. I was very satisfied with it after 6 months.
