Hello! I am still looking for a piano for my 5 y.o. daughter. Ideally, I would like to get Kawai K3. My second choice is Kawai K2. I would prefer to get a used one, but I cannot find one within 100 mi radius of Dallas TX. Kawai dealers in the area don’t negotiate, so they can keep their instruments to themselves. I found one used Yamaha U1 serial number 488715 and need help to find out more info on it. Asking price is $3k. Could anyone help me please.
I think I still like the sound of Kawai more but ,frankly, I cannot afford a new one right now.

Built in 1965. At 44 years old, this is too old for any degree of musical service for any degree of time for this kind of investment.

Unable to confirm at this point if it is "Gray Market". Do a search for "Gray Market" and "Grey Market" on this forum.

If you want to go Yamaha, and it seems like you do, look into the Yamaha Cable Nelson model CN116 and the Yamaha model T118 for just a few dollars over your budget.

Most likely a gray market piano in that I don't believe Yamaha was marketing pianos in the states in the early sixties.Steve Cohen would probably know being one of the first Yamaha dealers in the states.I remember the real early non gray Yamaha U1's being in a walnut satin. Story & Clark actually marketed Yamaha pianos in the early days.I don't remember seeing any uprts. back than just the G1 or ?

Not so fast.

If the pianos are honestly priced, they may be very well worth it.

Just getting a *discount* - any discount - doesn't automatically make for a good buy.

A tuner friend of mine in White Rock B.C. just bought a used U5 for Can 1000.

While this is an extraordinary good price and apparently takes tightening some pins [about $ 800 worht of work..] she didn't waste her time bargaining...

Marty above is right: in today's world you either buy a used piano for great price - or look elsewhere.

Good luck!

Norbert
