I have a Mason & Hamlin AA from 1917 with an "X" on the plate, just below the "AA." Any idea what the "X" signifies? I've seen other AA's that do not have this marking, and am curious as to why it's there.

So does that mean you don't know the definitive answer yourself? Or you do? If you do, why not just tell the OP?

I believe there are two different scales for the AA since it's inception. They all are of 57 wound strings in the Bass and tenor sections. the two different scales were not successive as for production via serial #. The earliest AA scale from before the tension bar reasonator era(late pre 1900)had shorter bass strings by 1/4",the tenor wound strings were the same. The X under the A.A were of the newer vintage AA from maybe 1912? That bass string scale was the same as the most recent vintage version.
I thought maybe one that does new Mason & Hamlin soundboards upon making a template would know the finite differences in the actual scale between the two plates. We only do new soundboards on Steinways with exception to Mason & Hamlin A. Thats all I can say.

There are at least 4 different AA scales: the 57 wound string model, the Y shaped bridge model, the 42 string bass model, and the current model. There may be others. Mason & Hamlin changed scales pretty often.

There is often a number and an X cast under the model designation on the plate, to the left of the bass hitchpins on all Mason & Hamlin pianos. I am not certain what that designates. I have not seen an X below the model designation stamped above the serial number, between the bass and tenor tuning pins.

Hm. Well first, thanks for the responses. Not being a tech myself, I'm not sure I understand exactly what this means...but I find it intriguing.

You may have seen this item (http://shue.org/plate.html) on the Web, which shows the sort of "X" I'm referring to and describes it as being "insignificant"...

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong!

The "X" simply marks the spot where Johnny Depp will be digging in his next movie.
