Do you keep a copy of each book that your students are learning from? It just seems so cumbersome to have so many copies laying around. However, I do want to be prepared to play the song to my student, if need be.

Secondly, do you listen to each technical exercise you give to your students? I am asking because this teaching time is so short and valuable, and goes by so quickly; listening to them play their finger exercises would take up time I could be using for something else. Then again, I want to make sure they are practising them correctly.

How can you plan a lesson if you don't have the materials? You need to think about more than just being able to play their songs, but what you want them to learn, in what order, how you want it to sound, etc. You must plan ahead for concepts and skills that are coming up, prepare the students to be successful with them, rather than just turning the page and seeing what's new today! For instance, if 8th notes are on the horizon, what experiences (both aural and physical) can you give them so that when they actually SEE 8th notes and have to reproduce them by reading, they already have the sound and feel of them? I do this kind of thing weeks in advance!

Any technique exercise you assign must be assigned for some specific purpose. It must have some point! Why assign it otherwise? How does the hand/arm look? How does the student sound when he/she is playing it?

I have copies of most things if not all. It's not necessary if they are working out of a basic method book, especially if you know it well. For more advanced pieces I find it useful for me to have my copy in front of me because I sit at my own keyboard and can demonstrate easily.

On the other point, if you set them something to work on then you should certainly listen to it. If time is short then be very specific about what you expect from them the following lesson and be prepared to go over it. You might set things to be reviewed in 2 or 3 weeks time but they should know when you expect it done.

I have copies of most things, definitely not all things.
I have enough that if they "forget" their stuff we have things to work from. I don't see the need to have everything.

Yes, I always listen to every single thing I assign. We usually don't do all the repeats, 1st & 2nd ending etc for time's sake, but we run through all of it.

If you're running short on time, maybe you could assign those things only every other lesson or so, so you have one lesson strictly for the lesson material and one lesson for technique exercises, then they play both for the 2 weeks in between. Is that clear? I hope you get what I meant smile

I have a desk copy of all literature the students are working on. As for methods, although I generally have new copies ready for students as they progress, I don't need to have them available as I teach.

I like to listen to what I assign, especially for younger students, so if time is short, then perhaps the answer is longer lessons, not less material.

I don't feel the need to have copies for myself of the basic method and technique books. I make sure I have the next book in line for them as much as possible. For more difficult pieces, yes I have my own copy.

And yes, I listen to everything I've assigned them to practice because I want to be sure they're doing them correctly. If time runs out, I make sure to pick up on it next time.
