I've tuned a fair amount of Yamaha p-22s, but I ran across one yesterday that needed a 40 cent plus pitch raise. When I got to A 1 and started to pull it up, it snapped at the becket. I tried for awhile to tie it, but there was not enough wire to work with, given that it was 21 gauge. A few holes in my fingers later, I continued the pitch raise process, being even more tentative. "Bang" said the next string as I got it near pitch.

I called Mapes this morning to order the strings, and as soon as I said the model number and serial number, he told me what strings I needed to order...I guess I'm not the first one to have this happen. Anyone here have the same experience?

If this is a Known Issue, you might see if Yamaha will cover the cost of it. They are good about that sort of thing.

Unfortunately, the piano is almost 20 years old. Worth a shot, though.

Dave and BDB, it is a well known issue. New specifications were made for those strings. I have had the same experience you had several times, including loss of blood. Those pianos were made long ago, so most of them have been repaired but it is always possible to run across one as you obviously did. If it happens now, I don't even try to splice it although I have been successful at that.

The size of core wire and the winding make the string too close to the breaking point when tuned at standard pitch. The steep angle from the V-bar to the tuning pin is another factor.

Agreed Bill. It is a very well known issue with certain P202's and some P22's. Mostly with P202's though. They have since changed things including the angle from the V bar area to the tuning pins.

Back around 1989 or 1990 I had a situation with a P22 made and sold a few years prior, by a dealer I did a lot of work for.

The piano was going through a lot of bass strings, including ones that had already broke once. Even though the piano was being used in a worship setting, with a fairly energetic player, Yamaha offered to replace the bass section with a lower tension set or settle with a one-time cash payment.

The impression I got from the rep I spoke with at Yamaha was that this was a known issue. Something else that was a known issue was blubbering hammers during soft playing, such that unusual let-off specs and the like were recommended.

Other than those things, I think those pianos were pretty nice. I still tune the P22 I mentioned, and it's remarkably stable and projects very well.

Jeff

The warranty is no longer valid, and Yamaha is out of these strings. So I ordered them from Mapes and will charge the customer accordingly.

I just hope the hammer spring retention cords don't start breaking soon...she just bought the piano!
