The last few days, particularly in the afternoon, it can take up to 5 minutes for something I post to finally go through. My browser (Firefox 3.0.12 for Macintosh, Mac OS X) says "Waiting for www.pianoworld.com" for the entire time until it magically goes through. The problem also affects viewing threads. It's not my internet; all other sites (and other fora I contribute to) load in a reasonable amount of time.

Is there some huge increase in activity here during the afternoon hours that's bogging the servers down? Just wanted to let you know! smile

I've had the same experience in that it has taken very long to access a thread this afternoon.

I've been having the same problem intermittently for many weeks. (Firefox is my default browser on a Windows XP machine.)

Sometimes when this is going on, I'm able to access the site in Internet Explorer. At other times, the pages won't load in either browser.

Occasionally, I've gotten an error message with language about a database error only visible to administrators in both browsers.

I guess I should have mentioned this sooner, but the downtimes have always been relatively brief and transient.

Good point; I have not tried Safari when I've been having trouble. Might be worth looking into. I get those same "database error" messages too.

[edit] I had a brief problem with this post; I tried Safari and PW loaded right up whilst it was still cranking away on Firefox.

I'm almost sure it's not your browsers. I've had the same problems. I've also had the same problem with another forum at a time when *this* one loaded very fast.

Everything is working fine right now. smile

I've gotten the "database/moderators" several times in the last few weeks, too, and the long loading times. Sometimes I've been able to get in from the PW home page, but it is frustrating.

Yes, I think it probably is an intermittent problem totally unrelated to the browser. I probably just got lucky a minute ago with Safari. laugh

Correct; it's been very frustrating on Safari as well; it seems to me that this is happening more and more frequently. Is this fixable?

Details like what you've been providing would help.

I doubt it's the servers, as we have 6 Sun servers balanced to handle the load.
It is more likely something lurking in the forum code.

When I saw this post a few minutes ago, I clicked on it in the recent posts box.
Sure enough, it took a while to load.

In the meantime I ran a ping and a tracert.

The ping went right through, 4 packets at an average of 73ms, the tracert also went right through, reaching the servers in about 12 hops with no delays.

[Linked Image]
That tells me the servers are probably ok.

It could be a bad router somewhere out on the Internet, but not so likely considering multiple people are experiencing the same issues.

Keep the reports coming, with details if possible.

I'll ask the people who program the forums what they think.

None here either. Very strange. I agree with Frank that it might be a code problem rather than a hardware problem.

[edit] And just as I said that, this post took about 1 minute to go through.

I have been experiencing the same thing out west here for Friday and then yesterday. Thought maybe it was "throttling" by the IP.
Whenever I do a speed test here the farther east I try the slower it gets. North/south is never a problem.....

Some of the problem can be ISPs, or router issues on the Internet.

However when multiple members from different parts of the country experience similar problems, I begin to suspect issues with the forums code.

I did try changing one setting on the forums that I had turned on a few days ago (referrer logging). I turned it off last night. Might not make any difference, but it can't hurt to try.

There is a version 8.0 of our forums software in the pipeline, being tested as we speak. I will evaluate uprgrading when it becomes a firm release.

This happened to me too, but I was blaming the problem on local connection problems due to severe thunderstorms

Heck if there's a brain fart, my cable goes down!

This morning, first thing, I was able to load onto the server and look at the thread topics, but when I tried to load a page I was experiencing the same thing.

Interesting to note that I was trying to load the page from the last posting on the right side, above the posters name, rather than click on the thread topic in the middle of the page.

First you could see the Zone Alarm active, the green side of the Zone Alarm would bounce (incoming signal) but the red side would remain idle(outgoing) The internet connecting indicator bar was green almost all the way across, and then before the last green cube shows in the bar it just stops. Then the Zone alarm goes idle both ways. I shut off the Mozilla and then came back a couple of minutes later and everything loads fine.

Then at 7:30am here a very loud bang outside….a seagull touched down on two wires of the transformer in the alley and WHAM!!.....just like a firearm. So at that point I wasn’t doing anything on the computer …………………..until now.

Oh and one more thing that might not be important, I was not logged in when this happened.

I've asked our hosting service techs to take a look.

We have multiple Sun servers with lots of ram, and they are connected
to a huge pipe in a primary data center in Canada. I don't think the bottleneck is there, but maybe they will find something when they run some tests.

It doesn't seem to be the number of concurrent connections, as there were only about 800 people on the forums in the last hour.

The code on the forums hasn't changed for a few months, other than that one setting which I put back.

Keep letting me know when you have trouble.

It would help to have details, like what you were doing, where you are connecting from (city/state), and what you are using for hardware/software (PC/Windose Vista / IE7/ etc.)

I just encountered the same while attempting to view the DP forums. I refrshed the page, which took awhile to load, and was able to view the thread. I've been experiencing this off and on for about two weeks. I'm on a laptop, Windows XP,IE7,No. Va. area.

Frank,

I was having a lot of problems around 5 pm mountain time. I'm in Denver CO, connection on Windows XP with IE6. The issue was that the website was non responsive, mostly when trying to access a specific thread, but sometimes when accessing a forum. It was not displaying the database error, just not responding when trying to open threads.

Next time, I'll try getting a traceroute.

This was at work, and I have not had any problems since I got home (about 7 pm).

Rich

Thanks everyone, please keep the detailed reports coming in.

When you experience problems with the forums, please try connecting to the main Piano World site (www.PianoWorld.com) to see if the problem is primarily limited to the forums.

I've sent emails to our ISP techs, and to the forums software people.
I've also turned on MySQL error logging so I can capture any database error messages.

Thanks for your patience, we'll get it straightened out yet.

I'm on a Mac running either Firefox 3.0.12 or occasionally Safari 4.0.2. The problems can crop up at any time for me...posting, viewing the forum home, individual forums, and threads. Have not tried the main page yet. Connecting from the southwestern US...

For the past 10-15 minutes, I've been unable to access the site with Firefox—no error message, but pages fail to load (the tab title says "Loading…" and seems to get stuck "loading")—whereas in Internet Explorer it's merely very slow. (I'm on a PC with Windows XP; Firefox 3.5.1; IE 8.)

This problem seems to be happening with increasing frequency (though the durations of the outages seem about the same).
