Let's not forget the fabulous and hilarious Little Richard!

I also love Elvis' keyboard player, but I guess he didn't sing....have you heard his cool playing on "Teddy Bear"?

During a night of insomnia I ran across a Marcia Ball concert on one of the public television stations.

Check it out! If the link doesn't work, do a U-tube search for Marcia Ball and "Play with Your Poodle."

I just love her complete lack of appropriate keyboard posture!

Yet another piano player who thumbed his nose at correct posture. wink

My daughter pulled this up...she's 15 but been crazy about Jerry Lee (whom she refers to as Jerry Lewis) since she was 4.

Okay, I'll stop now. My infatuation with the really ballsy rock of the 50's is that Little Richard, Jerry Lee, Elvis.....they didn't exactly invent sex, but they sure brought it out of the closet. On some of the U-tube videos the looks on the faces of some of first wave of crossover white audiences to this type of music is priceless...a combination of delight, fear, and transformation.

Oh, and PS: the only reason any of the stuff got recorded and performed is nobody was really sure what they were singing about, altho' to our jaded modern eyes it's all so obvious.

Karrin Allyson plays and sings at the same time. At least she did when she was living and performing here in Kansas City. She may be doing something different now in New York City.

I have some more to add. John Lennon, while primarily a rhythm guitarist, played piano on a lot of his solo songs. I am a Donald Fagen fan; he provided some beautiful piano and keyboard work on Steely Dan's and his solo albums (of course, he also hired a lot of great studio pros to play as well.) Lastly, good old Leon Russell (a fellow Nashville resident who I see at the grocery store occasionally) sang and played piano on his own albums as well as for Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Delaney & Bonnie, et al. Of the musicians listed above, Leon was by far the best pianist (and perhaps the worst singer) of the three.

Not far from my shop is a little Restaurant-Grill that has an absolutely incredible lady pianist/singer.

She has played there for years and years and is teaching on the side. Listening to her you would never understand why she hasn't become famous.

Until you 'see' her.

Not beautiful, not even pretty.

But the most wonderful singer/performer I have ever seen and a person with a heart to match.

May I give "Gill" my vote.

I forgot about Leon Russell. Also a really great record producer. He produced an Album by the great blues singer/guitarist Freddie King which was phenomenal.
