Hi Alidadash,

Welcome to the forums.

IMO, you can get a start on the PSR1000, but because it is not a weighted keyboard, there is a good chance that you will have challenges with control of dynamics and endurance when switching to an acoustic piano or weighted digital.

If your preference is for the Yamaha CP33, then you might find the Casio Privia models a bit to heavy. My Casio PX310 is really close to the weight of the grand piano I take lessons on (a Seiler grand).

Generally, it would be worth trying the following models:
Yamaha YPG635
Casio PX120 (PX130 when it comes out)
Korg SP250

I've never tried the Korg, but some people on the forums recommend it.

Try as many models in your price range as possible, even if you have only limited practice. Also try them with headphones as the sound is usually much better through cans than through the onboard speakers.

Alidadash,

I'm not sure if you are discussing prices in US $, or planning on purchasing in the US.

A new Casio PX120 is $499 at Guitar Center. A used PX500L at that price in the US would be too expensive, as it is a much older model.

If you are outside the US, the prices could be very different.

I suppose the PX-320 might be a good idea, because it has lots of patches in addition to the piano sounds, General MIDI support, rhythms, and a 2-track sequencer. The action is a bit clunky (typical Casio), but most other digital pianos feature a very limited number of sounds by comparison, so if you want to compose your own music...

I think $100 or so is normal (at least in the case of the P-85). However, the stand then only works for one DP model. So maybe an X- or Z-stand would be better. The wooden stands always make DPs look like something from a retirement home anyway.

Perhaps the main reason for a wooden stand is that it allows you to conveniently attach the 3-pedal unit, but if you are interested in pop music I doubt you need three pedals anyway...

HI Alidadash

I too have fairly recently taken up piano lessons. It's the most rewarding and frustrating thing I have done in awhile.

In the price range you're looking at,I would go for a Casio PX120 or 320. I'm sure that you'll be able to find good deals on them now, since Casio has completely revamped its Privia line. I have a PX-800 with which I'm very, very pleased. I believe the PX320 is the portable version of the 800. The key touch is on the heavy side, which I find is alright since I take my lessons on a Yamaha grand. I know Casio is regarded by some as junk (in the past I would have agreed), but these days, in value for the money Casio has a very good couple sleepers on the market.

Hi Alidadash,

I just got a Casio PX-320 and I really like mine. Guitar center has very good deals. If you subscribe to their email list, or even check at their website they ofter give coupons for discount like a $100 or 15% off on purchases over a certain amount etc; you can use these and get really good prices. Besides, they match any other price, so you can find the lowest price online from Bizrate.com or just search and take it to them. The stand was $50 and the three pedal unit $50 on a website. But since I read on this forum that they break in a year, I went for a Studiologic VFP-210 and it is great. I just don't get the third pedal and the half-damper feature which, once I am qualified, I could get later with a better pedal unit that should do it.

Good luck!

That was a very funny comment about the wooden stands looking like they're something from a retirement home.
