Lately, I've been enjoying reading many of the books recommended here at PW. Borrowing from Matt's idea of listing music played by PW members, I'd like to start a thread listing books related to pianos, piano music, pianists and piano composers. Please include the title, author's name and a very brief description of what it covers. To keep the list managable, please do not critique the book. We will assume you liked it if you add it to our list.

Here's mine so far:

Grand Obsession Knize (Perri's journey to find the perfect piano)

Inner Game of Music Green (Techniques for mastering nerves and tension)

Men, Women and Pianos Loesser (History of pianos)

My Life in Music Barenboim (Barenboim's experiences as a pianist and conductor. Interesting insights into the art of conducting.)

My Life with the Great Pianists Mohr (Personal reflections, caveat: heavy on religion).

My Many Years Rubinstein (Autobiography)
My Young Years Rubinstein (Autobiography)

Passionate Practice Elson (Evolving your attitude about playing, tension, nerves and performing.)

Piano Book Fine (Piano construction, purchasing, brands)

Piano Playing with Questions Answered Hofmann (Great pianist's advice).

Playing the Piano for Pleasure Cooke (1940's - advice on how to practice.)

Romance on Three Legs Hafner (Biography Glenn Gould)

Speaking of Pianists Chasins (Personal reflections on the great pianists of the early 20th century)

The Art of Piano Playing Neuhaus (Autobiographical and advice on technique)

The Perfect Wrong Note Westney (Advice on practice, nerves and performance. )

Under the Lid Brady (Technician's advice on piano maintenance with fascinating anecdotes about pianists and concert prep.)

Best regards,

Deborah

very interesting idea, Deborah (I can't really call you by your handle, gooddog!). May I suggest you format the listing a tiny bit (eg a comma or semi-colon) to separate the title and author for ease of reading

Well, it's not about piano playing per se, but this book influenced my own philosophy about making music. The author Michelle Cassou takes a process over product approach to painting. An approach I now apply to creating at the piano.

Highly recommended if you're looking for an intuitive approach to creating ... in any art.

Sorry, but I can't list over 100 books. Maybe when I get finished with Walker's 3 volume Liszt bio. I'm near the end of Volume II.

IMO, I'd add in the full author's name. This might make it easier for people to find the books.

The Art of Practicing; Bruser, Madeline; (Suggestions for practicing with relaxation, for all instruments.)

Improve Your Piano Playing; Meffin, John; (Tips for playing piano.)

Note by Note; Tunstall, Tricia; (Memoirs of a piano teacher.)

Piano Notes; Rosen, Charles; (Notes from a concert pianist.)

Dance and the Music of J. S. Bach; Little, Meredith & Natalie Jenne; (Study of J. S. Bach's dance music.)

The Lives of the Great Composers; Schonberg, Harold; (Do I really need to add a description to this one?)

The Lives and Times of the Great Composers; Steen, Michael;

Beethoven; Solomon, Maynard; (Biography of Beethoven.)

Mozart: A Life; Solomon, Maynard; (Biography of Mozart.)

Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician; Wolff, Christoph; (Biography of Bach.)

Effortless Mastery; Werner, Kenny;

What Every Pianist Needs to Know about the Body; Mark, Thomas; (Alexander Technique and anatomy for pianists.)

Ornamentation : A Question & Answer Manual; Lloyd-Watts, Valery & Carole L. Bigler; (A very practical study of how to perform ornamentation for intermediate pianists.)

I have other books that are on my to read list, but I'm not sure if we want to add these right now.

Rich

There are a few listed over here...

If you want a good laugh (and an inside look at playing the hotel/wedding/party circuit), you have to read Piano Girl by Robin Meloy Goldsby (she's in our Who's Who forum).

I took out all the books on piano playing from my university library at the beginning of the summer. Of those books, I'll recommend two:

Notes from the Pianist's Bench; Boris Berman (some technique, how to interpret music, playing with emotion, performing)

Piano Technique; Karl Leimer & Walter Gieseking (piano technique, memorizing)

Professional pianist and piano teacher.

The following books by Gerald Moore (some are out of print but you may find them in second-hand bookshops, or libraries):

Am I Too Loud?
The Unashamed Accompanist
Farewell Recital
Furthermoore (not a typo smile )
(these could all be described as memoirs of an accompanist)

Singer and Accompanist (the interpretation of 50 songs)
Schubert Song Cycles (um, Schubert Song Cycles smile )
Poet's Love (the songs of Schumann)

I'm reading a pretty good one just now: The Rest is Noise; Listening to the Twentieth Century. Alex Ross, Picador pub. (FSG), 2007, paper, 695 pages.

Ross worked as music critic for The New Yorker. This is a historical and musical overview of twentieth century composers, music, and the music scene. It was pretty harrowing century, when you think about it: WWI, WWII, Germany in the Weimar Republic and on into Hitler, Russia before the revolution and on into Stalin. Then again, there was Paris in the twenties, Hollywood in the thirties and forties, New York in the fifties and sixties. It is a pretty well-informed and unflinching look at a time it seems many music history writers would as soon skip over.

Ross is a pretty smart guy, and the text is dense with ideas and information, yet the story is readable and even gripping. At 695 pp., including an index, it is a lot of book for eighteen bucks.

I'm quite a British history freak, so this takes up a fair amount of time, but here are a few piano books I've read over the past several years:

Life and Liszt; Friedheim (intoxicated memoir)

I Really Should Be Practicing; Gary Graffman (Autobiography)

Cambridge Companion to Liszt; Edited Kenneth Hamilton

Rachmaninoff; Max Harrison

Alkan: The Music; Ronald Smith

The Pianist's Problems; William S.Newman

(Yet a bit embarrassed to admit that most of my music reading has not been piano oriented! Some months ago I read an incredible bio of Erich Wolfgang Korngold.)

"Just Being at the Piano" by Mildred Portney Chase is a favorite of mine to share with students, especially adult students. I didn't see this one on your list.
Nice idea for a thread, Deborah. What a wonderful selection of good reads!

Since this came up elsewhere:

The Capture of Inspiration; E. Robert Schmitz; the kinesiology of piano playing.

While we are on technique, I cannot understand how we could have missed

Basic Principles in Pianoforte Playing; Josef Lhevinne
Piano Playing with Piano Questions Answered; Josef Hofmann

And while we are on famous pianists

A Conversation on Music; Anton Rubinstein

A Music Study in Germany; Amy Fay; The music "scene" of the late 1800s
Reminiscing with Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, Robert Kimball and William Bolcom; not so much piano, but a far less well known music "scene."

Wonders of the Piano; Catherine Bielefeldt; the best book on how pianos are made.

Deborah,

Here's a correction for your list:

There are two books with similar names by different authors.

Lives of the Great Composers, The; Schonberg; (A general survey of the lives of many of the great composers)

Lives and Times of the Great Composers, The; Steen; (A survey of the lives of the great composers.)

A few additions:

Pianists Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature, The; Magrath; (Review and levels for common elementary to early advanced piano literature. Does not cover the advanced pieces.)

A Practical Guide to Solo Piano Music; Barnard; (Lists, Lists, and more Liszts. This covers rough levels of advanced pieces.)

Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire; Hinson; (available online at http://www.iupress.indiana.edu/iol/ Review and levels for common piano pieces. This does cover advanced pieces.)

There are a lot more books available online at the www.iupress.indiana.edu/iol/ link. I'm not sure how many of them you would like to add.

Rich

May I suggest that you edit just your original post? That way the entire post isn't repeated with each addition.

I would add

The Piano Shop on the Left Bank: Discovering a Forgotten Passion in a Paris Atelier, by Thad Carhart

Its a good suggestion but there is a time limit on edits. I can no longer open the last post. Also, by renewing the post, it appears on top of the forum page rather than slipping off into the land of old posts.

I should have added your suggestion previously. I loved that book.

I haven't seen these mentioned yet, but both are good reads:

Conversations with Arrau by Joseph Horowitz

Chopin: a New Biography by Adam Zamoyski

They are out of print but can be obtained used at Amazon.com for around $2. Your local public library might have them on the shelf as well.

Enjoy,
Jonathan

The thread is still live!

I've been able to find many out-of-print books through Amazon or in used bookstores. Sometimes the price is steep, but it usually is worth it.

Thanks, Jonathan.

OK Deborah, Confess. Have you developed a chronic case of PBAS? (Piano book acquisition syndrome, that is.) You know the only cure is to have a supportive member of Piano World come over and pack up all your piano books. (We'd be happy to take all your sheet music too, if that is also becoming a problem.)

Ha! I admit, I am a bibliophile married to a biblophile. At my house we joke that our books are like rabbits - they seem to reproduce overnight and we are always running out of bookshelf space. My husband once planned a romantic weekend in New York City. When we got there, he said he had made plans for us to visit some museums and other venues, (deadpan face with a twinkle in his eye)...or would I like to go to used bookstores?? I grinned and off we went. We returned to the hotel with arms loaded with books acting like little kids cooing over lost friends.

If you touch my music, you will have to die.

Best regards,

Deborah

Deborah,

You might want to post a link to this thread in the Chopin subforum. I'm not seeing many books about Chopin in the above list. (or is it officially a Liszt?)

In a few days, I'll see about adding the list to the Piano World FAQ section for posterity. Thanks to Deborah for a fantastic compilation!

Kreisler, that would be great! Members have contributed 106 book ideas. I'm sure there will be more coming too. I've got it saved on my computer as sortable Excel document. If you would prefer it in that form, let me know.

Thanks.

I was actually thinking about the Chopin subforum under the Composer's Lounge. I believe there is already another books thread in there.

I wasn't aware of this because it's a place I never visit. Perhaps you should be the one to post it since your "name" might be more recognizable?

You asked for Chopin? You got it! smile

These four titles are old but seminal books now in the public domain; links are to Google Books, where they may be freely downloaded:

Chopin: the Man and His Music, by James Huneker

Frederick Chopin as a Man and Musician
, by Frederick Niecks

Life of Chopin, by Franz Liszt

A Handbook to Chopin's Works, by George Charles Ashton Jonson

Here's a non-exhaustive list of important books currently in print (to the best of my knowledge), in no particular order:

Chopin: Pianist's Repertoire: A Graded Practical Guide, by Eleanor Bailie

The Music of Chopin, by Jim Samson

Chopin's Letters, by Chopin (collected correspondence with family, friends and publishers)

The Cambridge Companion to Chopin, edited by Jim Samson

The Chopin Companion: Profiles of the Man and the Musician, edited by Alan Walker.

Chopin: The Reluctant Romantic, by Jeremy Siepmann

Chopin In Paris: The Life And Times Of The Romantic Composer, by Tad Szulc

Chopin's Funeral, by Benita Eisler

Chopin's Musical Style, by Gerald Abraham

There are also biographies of significance by Herbert Weinstock and Arthur Hedley that are apparently out of print at present.

Steven

p.s. Deborah, I think this thread was a great idea.

Thank you for contributing Steven. I can't list the biographies without titles. I've been very successful finding out of print books on Amazon or ebay.

Edit: I just added a few I accidentally omitted. If I've left your contribution out, please let me know!

Queries about book recommendations are so frequent, I'm bumping this old thread to see if I can convince the moderators to put it someplace visible and permanent.

The most complete list of books about pianos or pianists or composers for pianos is most easily found by doing a search on those at Barnes & Noble or Amazon.

Nne of the best biographies of Mozart is by Wolfgang Hildesheimer (yes, he shares the same first name as Mozart), simply called 'Mozart'. It is funny and witty, quite philosophical at times as well.

Among my favorite books. I would even describe it more generally: his reminiscences and reflections on anything and everything about his life and all else, based on a series of lectures and Q-&-A's that he did at the Univ. of Chicago -- and accordingly, it comes off like him speaking, which he was. smile

It has some of the greatest music stories I've ever heard -- uplifting, infuriating, hilarious -- the whole gamut.

Has anyone read Alan Rusbridger's "Play it again"?
It is supposed to be the (real) story of an amateur pianist and busy journalist(editor at The Guardian I believe) who set out to learn and perform Chopin's Ballade No1 in one year. The book received had good reviews but I have not seen it around yet.
You can find a review here

Based on the Amazon US and UK sites, it looks like it was released in the UK in January, but won't be released until Sept. 17 in the US.

I'd rather play badly than not at all...

Deborah,

"Playing The Piano For Pleasure" is out of print, but if one can find it in a used book store, it is excellent. Cooke not only provides great practice techniques and repertoire suggestions, but makes one feel like practicing and playing for others is so much fun. It is 3heartsvery positive and encouraging writing for us sometimes timid or reluctant amateur pianists.

Yes! -- and actually available on Amazon (although not real cheap) and there's also a kindle edition.

"The Ivory Trade: Music and the Business of Music at the Van Cliburn Competition" by Joseph Horowitz is a fascinating behind the scenes look at the 1989 Cliburn Competition.

"Me of All People: Alfred Brendel in Conversation with Martin Meyer." Terrifically interesting, this is a series of interviews with Brendel.

"Musical Thoughts and Afterthoughts," Alfred Brendel.

"Virtuosi: A Defense and a (Sometimes Erotic) Celebration of Great Pianists" by Mark Mitchell is an interesting, but highly opinionated and often catty look at what this particular author has deemed the virtuoso pianists. (He's not an Alfred Brendel fan.)

"Music at the Limits" by Edward Said. Said was the music critic for the New Republic and this is a collection of columns/articles he wrote for various publications; all are interesting; not all are piano-specific but many are.

"Musical Elaborations" by Edward Said.

"Evenings with Horowitz: A Personal Portrait" by David Dubal.

"Piano Pieces" by Russell Sherman.

"The Loser" by Thomas Bernhard is a novel with Glenn Gould as one of its characters.

And I'll echo a few others that have been mentioned:

I thoroughly enjoyed Leon Fleisher's memoir "My Nine Lives." In between chapters about his life, Fleisher inserts "Master Classes" where he talks about some of his favorite piano works and how he plays them.

Reading that inspired me to read Fleisher's teacher, Artur Schnabel's memoir, "My Life and Music."

"Chopin: The Reluctant Romantic" by Jeremy Siepmann is not only an excellent bio of Chopin, but it concludes with brief interviews with a whole slew of big name pianists talking about Chopin's music, how they play it and why.

"The Rest is Noise" by Alex Ross is a terrific read.

"My Life with the Great Pianists" by Mohr has interesting personal details about Horowitz in particular.

Might it be a better idea to create a document and post the link to the edited document instead of reposting the entire list of books? It makes the thread quite hard to read. smile

No you don't. Let another site host it, or take it off the Internet, and insert that directly into your post, like so:

Adding on "Alice's Piano - The Life of Alice Herz-Sommer." It's a biography written about Alice Herz-Sommer, the oldest living Holocaust survivor. She's an accomplished pianist that was sent to Theresienstadt, which was being used as a propaganda camp. She performed in at least 100 concerts while being held there. (Frank Baxter recently created this thread about her documentary.)

It should be, that is what I wrote.

I guess Schmitz' book on the piano music of Debussy, The Piano Works of Claude Debussy, should be on the list.

Perhaps this is as good as any thread to ask this question...

Has anyone seen this book: "Anna Nikolaevna Esipova:", by Nikolai Bertenson, pub. 1960, Leningrad.

It may not have been translated from the original Russian, although I would have it translated. Because she was the student and wife of Leschetizky, and a formidable pianist-teacher in her own right, I am very interested in acquiring this book.

Regards,

JB

That's a fine and thorough book in my opinion. I wonder though, how close was Schmitz actually to Debussy? It appears he cannot have been awfully old when Debussy died? I'm asking because the edition that I have (Dover press) states that he was a good friend of Debussy, so...In any case, a good read for sure.

Regarding his other book the capture of inspiration, I'm having troubles finding info/excerpts. Is it out of print or something? Hard to find info online.

And I guess nobody knows whether anyone is intending to translate Samuil Feinberg's "Pianism as art"? Segments have been translated so far. Every pianist I know that understands russian says it is undoubtedly one of the most valuable books on piano playing.

I had a good friend who studied with Schmitz. He said that Schmitz would accompany Mary Garden when she sang for Debussy. I think he studied the piano works with Debussy.

Schmitz worked to get Jewish musicians out of France ahead of the Nazis. That is how Darius Milhaud came to Mills College and Pierre Monteux came to the San Francisco Symphony. He is sadly neglected these days, but he was a great humanitarian.

The Capture of Inspiration is long out of print, as are the accompanying editions of music. I have the book and the Chopin and Thompson Etudes which he edited. I guess they would be easier to find around here, since he ended up in San Francisco.

I was told that the CHopin etudes have a COMPLETELY unique set of fingerings unlike all other editions. I believe someone told me that the left hand opening stuff in the Revolutionary etude alters between two fingers??? (presumably for clearer accents...?)

Not that I am aware of. The opening of the Revolutionary is fingered the same in all three editions that I have: Schmitz, Paderewski and Friedheim.

Wonderful book on the Chopin piano concertos (also covers the Allegro de Concert) - highly recommended:

I have a copy but don't want to photocopy it as that is labor intensive. If you have other ideas, let me know as I don't mind sharing as long as it doesn't involve me copying page by page.

@murr - why don't you just borrow it from a local library - this is not a rare book. Type your area code in the box. This book is also available for sale in used form online.

Thanks a lot for the answers! I live in Greece and I have searched in all our musical libraries. Not any of them had the book unfortunately. There are few hardcover editions of the book at amazon, ebay etc but they are too expensive! At least I'd prefer to search it inside before giving so much money.
@Tyrone Slothrope thanks! As long as you don't live in Greece I cannot imagine any good or easy way of sharing!
