I found a Kawai CX-8 in great condition for $1900. Im wondering if someone knows what a fair price for a used piano like this would be? Google search hasnt helped. We have been looking at new Kawai K-3s as well(5k to 6 k).Any advice would be appreciated.

The used piano is at a shop and my son said its out of tune. There were two numbers I found inside the piano(one started with 188 and the other 168 and both 7 digits) that would seem to indicate it is was made between 1986 and 1990? Im also wondering if a new piano(K-3) would be more likley to stay in tune as oppossed to a 20+ year old piano?

Thanks!

Having done a quick search on the Kawai CX-8,I was quite surprised that the only place where this model exists is in Madrid, Spain.I've never seen one and I thought I've seen near everything as for Yamaha or Kawai gray market or not.It is 106cm in a Japanese console so..it is very much like the CX4 or CX5 in the states. In that it has 3 pedals,it is more closer to the US manufactured CX4 or 5 than the Japanese version with just 2 pedals.Strange! In any event in the USA it would sell preowned for approx.$1000-1500 preowned. No idea what "fair market" would be wherever you are. confused

Thanks pianobroker,

I live in Southern Ca. and the piano is here. The seller removed the front cover and it looks like new inside(and outside). I mean "really" like new. The seller claims the previous owner just had it sitting around.I found a site for Kawai serial#s and Date. We input the two different serial #s I got from the piano. The one starting with 168 seems to indicate a late 1986 manufacturing date and the other(188) as being made in 1989. Seller claims Kawai pianos made in Japan are better than US made.

I did notice info for a CX-8 on my Google search from Spain, but didnt see a price mentioned.

We have a yamaha digital piano and want a real piano now. I was told this instrument has been tuned twice since the shop aquired it and that if I buy it, it should be tuned after a week or two in my house. Since it is out of tune somewhat, Im wondering if a piano this age will tend to need more tuning than a new one? Maybe two or three a year if we are picky?

The tone is very similar in its core sound(pleasant and mellow) to the Kawai K3 through K8's we have tried. It seems the Kawai pianos, with minor exceptions, are of a similar consistancy much like the yamaha uprights, just less bright. Bigger Kawai piano= more of the same/similar sound. Slight variations in the actions. The K-8 seemed(at least the one we played)to be the the most different(more bass) compared to a similar sized K-6.

We sold our home a few years ago and are looking for a good practice piano while we are renting a condo. Im not sure if we should buy this piano or get a new K3 or K6. Bigger piano and bigger sound is nice, but this used piano is much cheaper.

If we ever buy another home in Ca., we will be buying a Grand and would like to test play your vintage Steinway Pianos.

Thanks again.

Southern Ca! Right in my own backyard. No wonder I couldn't find it grinStrange! I'm willing to bet someone brought it over from Europe as opposed to it being a gray market piano from Japan.Definitely not a US model.

After the initial pitchraise and tune it will not need more tuning than a new one, probably less.
The piano should suffice just fine for years to come until that time for that serious upgrade to that Steinway grand. laugh

Kawai CX-8 was discontinued in 1988. It was a 43" continental styled console in polished ebony, polished white, and a makore stained as walnut. Of course, built in Japan. At best, it would be 21 years of age. A new or newer piano will perform better longer.

Hi Marty,

Thanks for the info.

Yes, the piano is polished white. I dont know if you had time to read my LENGTHY posts, but I found two 7 digit #s inside. One started with 168, so the piano was most likely made in late 1986.

If the piano had little or NO use, would you still recommend a new or newer piano???

We are considering a new K-3 as well.
My son can tell the action and overall tone is better in the K-3, but there is over 3k difference in the asking price. This will only be a practice piano. We have already caught the Steinway "Bug" and want to get one at some point.
Best

Look into new Kawai K15 or K2 as lower cost alternatives to a new K3. They will out perform the CX8 and last much longer. Also you might compare the Yamaha T118 if there is a dealer near you.

If the CX8 checks out by a technician then the deal is not a bad one. For a little more investment in a new or newer piano you can extend your piano investment much longer.

Hi Again,

We have considered the the T118 and K-3 at one price point and the K-6 and U1 at another. All fantastic pianos IMO.

We really dont want a White piano, but its at a refinishers shop and they want to sell asap. I have a gut feeling I could get it for between 1k and 1.5k. I can afford any of these pianos, but it seems like a good time to be $ smart. Tough choice for us.
