So I am looking for a good recommendation of a recording of Schubert's piano trios, with special emphasis on the quality of the violin playing. I have listened to the Menuhins/Gendron recording and it is beautiful but the sound quality poor.
I have of course looked up reviews at the usual suspect web sites but there is quite a bit of discrepancy.
Your learned (and passionate) opinions will be much appreciated. The last time I got a recommendation here, it was terrific (Eva Knardahl's recordings of Grieg on a gorgeous Bosendorfer).

The recording I have is that of the Complete Trios on Philips (438 700-2), re-mastered on CD (1993)from recordings made in 1966 and 1969. The sound quality is fine. The piano trios feature The Beaux arts Trio with Pressler, Guilet and Greenhouse; I think it would be hard to beat the legendary Beaux Arts, although I'm sure there are modern recordings that may equal them.

Included on this 2-CD recording :
String Trio in B flat, D.581
String Trio in B flat, D.471
with the Grumiaux Trio : Grumiaux, Janzer and Czako
and
Piano Trio in B flat, D.898
Piano Trio in E flat, D,929
Piano Trio in one movement in B flat, D.28 "Sonata"

I also have the Piano Trio in B flat, D.898 with Collard, Dumay and Lodeon on EMI (7491652). It's a little newer recording, made in 1987, but I've never compared their Trio with that of the Beaux Arts.

Regards,

BruceD

I have a great fondness for the Suk Trio, but they only recorded Op. 99 and the Notturno.

Istomin - Stern - Rose

This recording is how I learned to love Schubert. It's absolutely incredible. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If I were stranded on a desert island and had to choose between fresh drinking water and this recording, I'd pick this recording.

If my copy ever gets scratched, I'm buying it again. If it's out of print, I'll trade a kidney for it on the black market.

+1 (minus the trading kidney part), one of my all-time favourite studio recordings.

I did get the Istomin-Rose-Stern. Thanks very much for the recommendation, although I will keep my kidneys while alive but I certainly signed off all useful body parts postmortem (or post being mangled up by a cabby here in NYC where pedestrian deaths are quite high.. I do digress).
It is indeed a wonderful treat. What harmony among the three artists. It is truly gorgeous playing. A violinist friend had also recommended this recording and thinks of it as a prototype of "group play".
I also wondered about the Thibaud-Casals-Cortot version and whether Richter recoreded it with any of his friends?
