Hi all. Have devoured this board for a couple of weeks, while reading Fine's book, and playing tons of pianos. Have had an upright for years...finally want to pull the trigger on a grand with two daughters playing, and me plunking. The eldest has hung in there for 7 years, and wants to continue at age 14, so this isn't a whim.

Am comparing a Story and Clark 6', with a Hamilton 6'2. Both new both around $8k-$9k. Then went to my Piano Tech who also sells a few restored. Showed me a Schumann 6' as described in the subject line. Fine has almost nothing about this brand name in his book other than Samick made them...but no dates at all. The piano tech has it at roughly $10k, and says it's 20 plus years old, and came right out with "it's Chinese". He puts it at a level above the S&C, and the Hamilton/Baldwin. Fine talks about some German engineers working for Samick sometime ago...but it seems odd that something out of China that old could be priced at $10k, and considered above market. It is very "bright" sounding. I usually like bright, but this may even be too much for me. He said he'd voice it to be a bit mellower if i liked, at no cost. Looks like a great instrument, but what do I know. I do trust the tech, but thought it was "different" that he really didn't know much about the instrument. I can't find any website that can give me an age range on the serial number above. At least I'd like one sentence from someone like "yeah they made them during the following two decades, and they stunk", or "Yes, Samick had a little higher end line going in the 1980's and this was it" Barring any ability to find out anything....I will likely pass, even though my tech is a good guy. I figure if I ever did sell it, the buyer would go through this same drill, and say no thanks. In the meantime the daughter wants the Hamilton 401. Advice?

Sorry to bump this. I wanted to see if anyone might be able to check on this model and serial number. I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks in advance for your help.

E. Howard,

Schumann was made by Samick in Korea ....
It was a stencil piano if I remember correctly ...
Sold for way less than $10,000 new back then.
This one appears to be way over priced ..
Look for info on Samick if you want more details ...
Schumann by Samick is no longer being made ....
For $10,000, there are many pianos that are better buys IMHO...

Best,

E Howard--
Bear's right. Offhand, I can't think of anyone I trust out selling 20 year old Schumann for 10 grand. New 401 not bad deal for 8k or less; your daughter liking it is something to consider. I'd also look at Nordiska and other chinese grands, used Yamahas and Kawais etc. No reason I see that you can't get decent smaller grand for around 10k,+/-, or even a good upright. If you need rpt to evaluate used pianos, suggest you find new one, shanghai old one.
