My CD of the Chopin concertos is labelled as "jazz" music, and my CD of the Liszt concertos is labelled as "rock" music... o.O

Labeled by whom, by DG? Labeled where, on the CD, or in a distributor's catalog?

Regards,

Well, that sounds about right for Liszt. In the Teaching Company course I am listening to, Robert Greenberg compares Liszt to Heavy Metal.

I have just listened / watched Greenberg's DVD on Schumann. Did you like him? What course is it?

Thanks Andromaque,

Greenberg is always amusing. This is the How to Listen To and Understand Great Music course. In particular, he is discussing Totentanz. I've never taken a music history or appreciation course, so this is great for me, but might not be as valuable if you had a good basis in music history.

If it's CDDB we're talking about (the web database programs use to determine the CD in the drive), its classical entries are notoriously unusable. Full of mispellings, pieces attributed to the wrong composer etc. etc.

These entries are all user-submitted and one can't help but wonder why, of all people, classical listeners should exhibit such sloppiness.

Agreed - I've spent quite a bit of time correcting entries. One of my CDs came up in Japanese, so I had no idea what any of it meant and have to go through and figure out which CD it is and enter it all manually.

Well, they always say Liszt was something like the first rock star, with all the excitement around his personality and his playing. Today, they smash their guitars, in his day audiences were said to be disappointed when the piano survived the evening without having lots of broken strings or other things falling off... smile
