How to remove old tape stuck on keyboard keys? #1216775

A while ago, my friend lent me a 17-year old Casio synth keyboard so I can practice during the weekends. The 'piano' sound is a joke, but it's better than nothing. Problem is, her mom put masking tape with the note names on each of the keys many years ago. The masking tape is hard to remove, with the glue underneath the tape all dried up. Any suggestions on how I can safely remove them?

Three suggestions:

Safest: place dampened kitchen towel on the keys, and leave for 15 mins, or so, then try to remove the tape with fingernails.

Medium safe: spray WD40 onto kitchen towel, and repeat above.

Last resort: Repeat above, with nail varnish remover. (non-acetone)

There are citrus based adhesive removers, but the effectiveness of any cleaner seems proportional to how much it harms the environment, so they probably don't work. If it were me, I'd put a little alcohol on a Qtip and apply it to the rear surface of A0 and see how it works. If that doesn't work, crank up the intensity to lacquer thinner. Don't leave the thinner on too long. I'd use some kind of mild cleaner to make sure you get it all off. And open the window so you don't get high on fumes or blow yourself up when you flip the lightswitch in the room.

I've found WD40 to be remarkably effective as an adhesive remover. It might have to soak through the tape to be effective and if you use it, be sure you can clean it all off or the smell might be worse than the tape. Don't let it drip between the keys or anything like that.

Or you could just ignore the tape.

Goo Gone would probably work. It's a citrus-based product available at lots of places like target, wal mart, or auto parts stores.

I taped the notes on my own piano when I was first learning and then again when my kids asked. Both times I used a Q-tip with baby oil to get the sticky residue off after I peeled the tape. Sometimes glass cleaner is enough but for the tough stuff baby oil worked better.

I'll figure it out eventually.
Until then you may want to keep a safe distance.

I would use naphtha on an old rag(good old Ronsonal lighter fluid). It will take it off easily and I doubt it would damage the keys.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! laugh Right now, the only readily available substances from the ones mentioned are water and baby oil, so I'll start from there. There's a little quirk, though. My mom heard me playing on the keyboard and I got her interested in trying to learn playing a simple tune. She didn't want me to remove the note names so it'll be easier to play! So for now I'll leave the note names on, but I really want to remove at least the finger numbers at the bottom.
