What do you think is the best black material for a hand rubbed finish? I have tried the target coatings water- based lacquer and had trouble getting enough build on the edges. Is there something better or is back to regular lacquer?

You might try rounding the edges slightly before coating. If you look at a polyester finish, the edges are always somewhat rounded. The polyester won't stick to a sharp edge. The water-based lacquer may be similar in that respect. I'm not really sure. I've used the Enduro Waterbase, but it's been a while and I don't remember having that problem. If you want sharp edges, you may be stuck with nitrocellulose lacquer.
