Here's the story. You know those long plastic rods we use to open and close the slats on venetian blinds? Mine falls off. I put it on my closed piano lid (Yamaha GC1) while I try to fix the problem. Phone rings. I return to piano, lift the lid quickly, then realize the plastic rod has rolled inside.
I can't see it. I can't get it.
Piano plays just fine, but -
Has anyone had this happen?

I'm sure the next time the piano tuner comes out they will be able to get it out for you. If it's not causing a problem, then it can wait until then. You may want to post on the Piano Tuner's Forum. They may be able to give you directions on how to get it out.

With pencils, all the time. Lift out the lid from about half-way open.

I seem to have a solution to everything! This thing is flexible and although not exactly German engineered, it works. Sorta like going fishin inside your piano.

I drop pencils that way all the time...but sometimes I can hear it. I have to unscrew the fall board to get them! Need to put them on a string or something!! Pianos should come with a built in desk off to the side don't you think?

I know how to take off the lid on a grand piano (I've done it many times), but I'm not sure if it's the same for the OP's piano. I'll describe it anyways if it helps.

First, unscrew the bolts or screws underneath the piano at either side of the keyboard. This will allow you to lift out the blocks on either side of the keybed. Then you should be able to take the lid out at a 45 degree angle and get out the thing that is stuck in there. Putting the lid back can be a bit tricky because it's hard to line up the little pins on each side to where they should slide in, but it's not impossible.

A piano is a mechanical thing, and you shouldn't be afraid to do this.

Thanks so much for everyone's response. You're a great bunch.
I am doing more research on my options. As I have an inadequacy problem, I think I'm going to leave it to the piano tuner.
I'm nervous about my husband, though. He loves Morodiene's directions for "taking the lid off a grand piano" and he's over there circling my precious beauty right now!
