I've seen recommendations here for training books, generally the kind that offer (mostly) music. Nothing wrong with that, but I wonder if anyone has thoughts/recommendations on other kinds of books.

There are so many ... books on body mechanics, books on technique, old-time method books written by past masters, etc.

I can't afford to buy them all, obviously. The real problem is that the local bookstores have grossly reduced their collections in this area. Lots of popular (sheet) music books, pop music culture books (yes, Elvis is alive!), etc. But next to nothing of the type I'm looking for. All I can do it buy online. But it's hard to get a feel for a book without seeing it. (Is it just me?) So I hesitate.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

In case you're not already familiar with it, I recommend doing some browsing at Google Book Search. If you go to "Advanced Book Search" and specify "Full View Only," your results will be limited to items that are available in complete form and typically can be downloaded in PDF form. A surprising amount of great old stuff is now in the public domain and is freely obtainable there.

For body mechanics, anatomy & physiology for pianists I like "What Every Pianist Needs to Know About The Body". Here is the website for this book:
