Hi, I am a new member of this board. I have a general question. I am very interested in buying a digital grand piano (CLP 380 and/or Roland HP series) for my home but the prices of new models are out of my range. What kind of on-line venues can I search to find used digital grands for sale? Is there a specific area of this website that functions as a used piano exchange / auction forum?

How much CAN you afford?
There are digital pianos for as little as $400 or as much as $10,000.

Someone just picked up a new CLP380 (digital upright shape) for $3800. This of course may be a "one off not repeatable" deal but I'm pretty sure for $5k (maybe even $4k) you'd be able to pick up a new CLP380.

The Digital Grand (shapes) don't start till way higher (CGP1000 full size and the CVP309/409s are silly money.

For that much money, you can get either the HP207 or the CLP380, and still have money left over.

Important: Read the CONSIDERATIONS WHEN BUYING A DIGITAL PIANO thread and the DIGITAL PIANO "PRICES PAID" -- NEW THREAD

You'll find pricing information that will help guide you.

Short summary: Disregard the "list" price. Disregard the dealer "asking" price.

But read the threads to learn more.

I'm sorry. I indicated the wrong model. I have a specific interest in the Yamaha CLP 380, and I'd like to spend $3-5K.

But more to the point, my question really is more general: How do I go about searching for a used digital piano? Is it merely a shot-in-the-dark on e-bay or craigslist? Or are there dedicated sites that buy and sell used digital pianos?

Rich,

I don't know where you are. In SoCal where I am, working musicians often use a free Internet advertising site called Recycler. Don't know if you have anything similar. You can also locate a lot of gear on college music dept. bulletin boards (if you're near one).

The problem is that working pros and music students generally won't have digital grands. For those I think the two you mentioned (craigslist and eBay) are the best. You need to be careful though. Most folks hold onto these until they're not functioning very well or are obsolete by current technology.

+1 for eBay and Craigslist.

Anytime you're buying sight unseen it's a good idea to ask questions about every aspect of the piano. For example the case, are there any scratches at all? Do you use all of the functions of this piano? (DP's usually have multiple voices and "split points" for assigning them.) The pedals, do they all produce the results that their supposed to? Any noisy or clicking keys? Any keys that don't function perfectly every time? And on and on...

I got my DP grand - a Bachmann - via eBay. Good price, good DP, but lots of questions. Several exchanges with the seller. He was running out of patience, but I wasn't going to buy unless he answered all my questions.

Horwinkle,

I just happened on this post today. I don't have any respect for the sort of backbiting underground PMs that you're boasting about here. If I have a bone to pick, I'll bring it to your attention, but I guess you know that already.

In this thread the OP's question was:

Now I wonder whose threads those are. They wouldn't happen to be yours, would they?

When the OP posted a clarification of a model number, you added:

Read the indicated forum threads.

Do you honestly not find your reponses obnoxious in this case? You are flat out demanding that the OP read your Opus I and Opus II even if all he wants is recommendations on places to find used digital piano listings. It seems to me you are a bit to eager to lasso posts and pull them into your corral of unending specs and stats. No offense intended, but that is my honest opinion.
