We recently moved from NJ to VA, and brought our 5’7” August Forster piano with us. The move seemed to go well, but a few weeks after we had moved in we discovered what looks like a hairline crack on the hinged part of the lid. The crack is about 12” long and seems to go all the way through, although at this point there is no separation of the wood. We didn’t even notice it until my wife went to dust the piano and noticed the thin scratch line in the light.

While there is no real playing problem with the piano in its stationary location, I would expect that the lid would break if we had to move again.

In order to process the claim with the moving company, they are asking for an estimate for the cost of repairs. We have NO idea of a ballpark for this type of repair. The piano was about $21K when purchased new in 2003 from Altenburg Piano in NJ.

Does anyone have any idea of what this type of repair might cost? I’m not looking for anything too exact, but I just have no idea if this is something that could be fixed for $100, $1,000, or $10,000!

The hard part for estimating an actual fix is that right now there is no gap – it almost seems like the piece would have to be “broken” first, in order to then be glued back together again (or whatever would be done).

Anyway, sorry to be so vague, but any tips would be appreciated!

Doug A.

You would be better off replacing the whole lid. Call the dealer to get the price of a new lid to report to the insurance company. A poly repair may work for ebony polish, but if it is a wood grain it wwould be very tough to match a repair.

Curry,

Thanks for the advice. Certainly the lid replacement would be the most pleasing. Also, since the crack is on the hinged lip portion of the lid, perhaps just this section could be replaced.

It is an Ebony polish so matching a grain isn't as much an issue.

In any case, a piano restoration shop about 90 minutes north of here has offered to give me an estimate, so I've sent them a few photos.

Thanks again!

Doug A.
