Wolfram|Alpha is set to launch on Monday.

Judging from this picture, I think it might be best to stay away from anything connected to the Internet.

And I always thought it was Bill Gates trying to take over the world.

Agreed. I saw that a few days ago, and I can think of a few moments watching that video that passers-by would've looked at me and thought, "What is that idiot gawking at?"

Pretty amazing stuff.

Cool; I've heard a lot about it already. I'll be happy to try it out on monday.

Rich - since you may be taking too much for granted here concerning the currentcy of the technical knowledge of many, and on behalf of all those who are not advanced level techies and who fear that asking would reveal their embarrassing computer illiteracy, allow me to inquire: what the heck is Wolfram/Alpha?

Regards, JF

You don't need to wait until Monday - it's up and running already! Pretty impressive.

John Frank,

Wolfram is the company that makes a program called Mathematica. Mathematica is aimed at symbolic computation aka arithmetic, algebra, calculus, charts, graphs, etc. In other words it is the ultimate way to cheat at doing your math or science homework, if you could afford it.

The name Wolfram|Alpha is derived from the library planet called Memory Alpha in the original Star Trek series.

The concept that it is a different spin on a search engine. Instead of searching for information, it is aimed at recalling or computing facts, figures or calculations.

Rich

Hmmm... well, there's one 13-year-old in Kentucky who's not too impressed. She eagerly sat down and typed in "occupations in Kazakhstan" (which is the one piece of her report that she has not been able to find in other places... and she had tried that CIA site already). Wolfram/Alpha just said "Not sure what to do with your input". frown Then she tried typing in just "kazakhstan." Five minutes later (and I mean five *real* minutes, which is a VERY long time for computers) it was still grinding away and my daughter had left the room.

I'm getting the impression that wolfram/alpha is better for mathematical kinds of questions than social science stuff.

I'd say things like these can be handy: http://www09.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=C+E+G+Bb+D+F%23+A
