I don't mean Hanon; just pieces where the melody is in the left hand or specifically work on creating speed and flexibility with the left hand.

I have a problem with my left hand that's only noticeable when I'm playing a fast piece; it can't keep up with my right and feels more awkward and "unsure" -- i.e., I never have to look at my right for it to always be in the correct place and position, and I constantly have to be watching my left to make sure it's where it's supposed to be on the keys and not bent or curled awkwardly.

My teacher says I don't move my left arm enough and that my left hand is too tense (probably from me stressing out about "messing up" with the LH) and doesn't move at the wrist as much as it should.

I don't have a lot of music that is geared to help with that, so any suggestions in this area would really help.

Anything frome early intermediate to late intermediate difficulty would be great.

Schumann's "The Merry Farmer" immediately comes to mind. Most of the melody sits in the left hand. It is more of a beginner's piece, but I think that it still can be an excellent exercise if you complain of left hand deficiencies.

Good luck!

I agree that Chopin's 28/6 is a good piece for practicing with the melody in the left hand. For speed and flexibility, you could try 28/3 from the same set.

You might also try Saint-Saëns's _Six Études for Piano Left Hand, Op. 135_ (Masters Music Publications, Inc.). I've seen it for $8.95 at Hutchins and Rea. I'm not sure what level this music is, but it does not look forbidding, maybe worth a try?

It sounds as though you may want pieces that move the LH around a bit, but they don't necessarily have to have the melody in them. I would really ask your teacher for a piece to help you with this, as she knows what would be best given your current skill set.

Is your lefty fine when you play hands separately or still awkward and unsure?

I think this set of exercises by Czerny, 24 Piano Studies for the Left Hand, Op. 718, looks very worthwhile and appropriate to your needs.

It contains scale passages, arpeggiated chords, thirds, trills, turns, repeated notes and skips (all in varied articulations), and concludes with an octave study.

Thank you for the replies!

Malkin - It's noticeable when I'm playing something that jumps around or is fast, even with hands separate. Teacher says i'm not bending my hand to the sides enough (and when compared to RH movement I can see that) but it takes conscious effort to move it right. The hand simply feels clumsy, like it's half-asleep :| Odd isn't it? Or maybe it's common? I don't know.

It's just practice I need but aside from scales I hadn't much material for it.

Morodiene - She has been assigning pieces that bring out the weakness (e.g. pieces that don't have a repetitious LH) but I'd like more practice material outside of lessons.

Thank you for the suggestions so far -- I'll try them out.
