I am trying to exact year date my Kurtzmann 5'2" Baby Grand - The instrument is in spectacular original condition right down to mint set of ivories - I found one place online that gave serial number info but was rather wide in year ranges - I am trying to exact year date K1202855 - I am guessing 1936 - can anyone help?

Thanks

I suggest you stop dating your Kurtzmann. There's just no future in the relationship and neighbors will talk.... wink

Per the Piano Atlas, the number you give has too many digits to be a Kurtzmann serial number. They run from 2000 (1890) through 107,000 (1938).

It also says that Wurlitzer used the name from 1935 - 1938. If yours is a '36, then it may well be that the Kurtzmann you are dating is really a Wurlitzer in Kurtzmann drag. eek

my mistake - number is K102855 - I also read an article that stated Wurlitzer controlled Kurtzmann from 35-38

'Atlas lists serial numbers starting with 97,300 for 1934, no numbers for 1935, and numbers starting with 102,900 for 1936.

Draw your own conclusion - yours may have been one of the last of the Kurtzmanns, or the first of the Wurlitzers.

Three Buicks? Got any pictures of 'em?

Do any of 'em have that cool setup ('55-'56?)where you mashed the accelerator to the floor to engage the starter motor? I always wondered what would happen if you floored one of those to pass a truck...

Steve, the accellerator start feature was a Buick feature for a couple decades - once started and in gear the starter was disengaged so you could mash the peddle and enjoy Buicks Smooth power.
