After much researching, and a couple of fits and starts, I pulled the trigger last week on a new piano.

Buying a piano is one strange trip! Many of you have suffered through my posts and given some good advice and opinions. Many thanks.

I visited most of the piano dealers in Southern California over the last nine months. They are a very nice bunch, let me tell you. Only a couple, who shall remain nameless, reminded me of car salesmen.

Things move fast in this market. When it finally became possible to own a piano, I headed to Piano City in Mission Viejo to buy the piano I'd decided on, a J. Pramberger studio piano, only to find the doors shuttered. I'd been talking with Gene there, and he kept making offers no one could refuse. Except for someone with no available space at the time.

Marty Flinn and John Mila at Keyboard Concepts are great guys, and they treated me well. Marty was very patient with me at times. Thanks. I started buying music there just because they were so upfront.

My budget was tight, and I wanted the most bang for the buck. That means I didn't follow all the conventional wisdom.

I was offered a deal on a Kawai K-2 that I couldn't refuse. I made a promise that I wouldn't reveal the price, it was that good. It came with free delivery, one tuning and an adjustable bench. That's the good news. Here's the bad news: it was delivered in a crate right out of the warehouse. I suspected that would be the case, but was afraid to ask.

I'm going to have a technician come and do the prep for me, even with that cost, It'll still be a good deal.

It's a compromise, a small piano, nice tone, very nice action, even unprepped. It is a learning instrument and will do the job well I think.

I figure I have about two years to shop for the replacement!

Nice picture of a beautiful piano, Gary! It must have been a shock to find the piano store closed when you went back to it, but I'm glad you got such a good deal on a very fine replacement. I just traded a Kawai upright in when I got my Estonia, and we all enjoyed playing it. They hold their value as well, so it's a great piano for your situation.

"I visited most of the piano dealers in Southern California over the last nine months." and lived to tell about it.

"I figure I have about two years to shop for the replacement!" Whoah! Slow down! Give your piano a chance to grow on you.

Congrats Gary!

It looks like a wonderful piano. Do not denigrate it as merely something to learn on. My wife and my daugher have made that comment about my piano, and it kinda irritates me when they say it. I like my piano. I hope you like yours, too, and aren't already looking past it.

And another piano saga concludes happily!

As a former Kawai owner, I think you'll be quite happy with the quality of their product.

Thanks, Marty. I feel guilty having bought my piano elsewhere. No joke. That says a lot about Keyboard Concepts and their philosophy of business. But you haven't missed out on my business, yet. The future awaits.

And thanks for all the well wishes. (I was looking forward to Bear's "Welcome to the Kawai family" message) I'm enjoying my new piano a lot. Sure beats the DP.

As a member of the Kawai family, I want to congratulate you on an excellent choice. The Kawai is well built, stays in tune beautifully. You will enjoy yours for many many years.
