Betty.

Saw the Puyallup Fair ride accident posted on the online newsites. After I realized that is where you live, Betty, I thought I would reach out and let you know that we hope everyone is ok and that none of your students were injured.

Gosh, I never thought of that. My good wishes too.

On a lighter note, how many people at PW know how to pronounce Puyallup?

Best regards,

Deborah

Thank you so much for your concern about kids in Puyallup! I'll be sure to show your post to my students this week, I think they will smile about how we reach around the world in friendship.

I read that this morning, too, and it said 6 were taken to the hospital which is very nearby, and that the accident occured in the children's rides, not the big giant rides for teens and adults. This is a busy Spring event, but not the size of the September Washington State Fair, several weeks long!

I didn't stop to wonder if I knew families who might be involved before, but I think now I will check up on how that is going today.

"Pew-el-up" is the pronounciation of this American Indian tribe in the Puget Sound area.

DragonPianoPlayer and gooddog, you are both so kind!

Betty

Isn't it more like Pew-all-up"? My husband used to have a business up there. I had a hard time pronouncing it at first, but learned from one of his employees who's married to an American Indian.

Yes, it's just horrible about the accident involving all those kids at the fair.

News story from the Tacoma News Tribune with a photo section and article.

There were also lots of comments by posters about safety and such. I'm sure the investigation will put lots of focus on safety for all the other rides at the fair.

Happy news in Sunday's Seattle Times: "All 6 hurt at Puyallup fair released from hospital" and "none of the injured riders...was hurt seriously".

I thought it was pew-al-up, accent on the "al" as in "pal".

Best regards,

Deborah

Hi, Deborah!

I read that this morning too, and was greatly relieved to hear it. The fairgrounds are only 1/2 a mile away from Good Sam, but only 2 went there, an adult and a child; the other 4 were taken to Tacoma 12 or more miles away. That is because ambulances are assigned and delivered to which ever hospital has space to handle them at the time.

About the "el" or "al" - I like your word "pal" because it does the same thing I was trying to convey in "pel". "Pelting rain/pelican/help" - "L".

"Pew - L - up"

Did we get it right?

It's a pretty day, but chilly here, how are you doing up North?

Today is the last day of the Spring Fair at the fairgrounds where the accident happened. My hubby, Gordon, and "Harmony Kings", barbershop chorus, get to go over to the fairgrounds this afternoon to sing in a litle competition of singing groups in the area - with prize money. These will be the guys with the tuxedos and the red bow ties.

It's a great day; not chilly at all (60's). I'm digging more holes to plant more perennials -(not good for the hands but the flowers will be good for the heart). Now that the chores are done, I'm off to practice.

I enjoy barbershop - hope it goes well for Gordon. My husband is back east visiting his sick dad. frown

Best regards,

Deborah
