Well I’m not too sure how long this one is but it must be almost 20ft. or more. Check out this video of possibly the longest piano in the world. It would be interesting to see where this brilliant young mind ends up in 10 yrs. or so…….

His next project is finding a piano mover willing to move it.

I would love to see the specs on how he built it.

Thank you, Dan, for this extraordinary item. I saw it on "Close Up" last week and it is incredible and inspirational that a 16 year old could plan and complete such a project over 4 years on a remote South Island farm in New Zealand.
It seems a playable piano and although it is difficult to judge the quality of tone from the television clip, it also sounds nice.
How could he have possibly had an iron frame cast for such a monster of an instrument?
I am sure that it is indeed the longest grand piano in the world.

Best wishes,

Robert.

How and where could he have acquired so much knowledge about piano building at such an early age?

Maybe he should write "(Gigantic) Grand Obsession Part 2"!

Robert.

So the plate is cast iron?
Do you know what he used for soundboard material, action, etc.
Also any idea of what he spent on this project?

It also interesting that he opted for a fancy cabinet instead of a plain ebony case.
Ebony would have been the easy way!!!!!

I believe that superlong pianos can be built using harps made of concrete.

The harp has to withstand the tension of the strings, but the harp itself has to withstand a pressure load. Concrete is much better than metal for withstanding pressure loads. It should be no problem at all to pour a 100 feet concrete harp and longer. It would allow for simple (unwound) strings, straight strings without any overstringing, no breaks, etc.

Below is a pic of a concrete piano, although not a superlong piano, that weighs 3 tons.

Came across a couple links while searching for info about the piano...

Sounds like it's time for me to start making plans for such a project (wishful thinking), as I can't seem to find my piano in a store or on craigslist... (and the two Hamiltons I now have are just a stopgap)

For mine, though, I'd add a few keys... going down to at least an octave below the Rubenstein, maybe 2.... and going up.. oh I don't know how far... general midi goes up to G at about 12.5kHz, I can hear up to about 16kHz... maybe stop at A# around 14.9kHz or so.
No, it doesn't need to be 100 feet long like could be done (according to doremifasolati), but if it was that long, I'd want the speaking length of A0 to be at least 75-80 feet, which I kinda doubt is possible.

Maybe I should build an upright first. (no, not a tall one like the Klavins - just something around 5 feet tall maybe)

don't think it's gonna happen though. frown
