Hello All,

Does anyone know what would be a good deal on a Kawai RX-2 Grand Piano plus tax? After weeks of deciding on a piano I really think this is the one for me. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Merrill

Hi Merrill,

Welcome to the forum ..

Private / individual sale?
Craigslist sale?
E-bay sale?
Dealer sale?
Factory authorized Kawai Dealer sale?

RX-2 new or used? If used is it a grey market piano?
Need serial number to verify it's age.
If used, You should hire an in independent RPT to check it over and give it an OK.
If used, does it have Kawai's Millennium III ABS Carbon Action {Latest action}
RX-2H is the newest model of the series, is it an RX-2H?
What finish, ebony, polished ebony, wood finish?
Is it straight out of the box un-prepped, or un-boxed and well prepped?
2 In home tunings?
Free voicing, regulation, tweaking, etc., after the piano has settled in it's new environment for a period of time? {Your home} Also, remember the acoustics in your home will vary considerably from the dealer's showroom floor.
Adjustable Artist bench included?
Delivery included?
Obviously, State sales tax is an extra cost, unless {usually} purchased out of State and delivered {shipped} to your State, some restrictions apply State to State.

Where do you live? California? Northeast? Midwest? Prices vary ... Economy!

Real prices can vary all over the place!! Depends on how much work, if any, has been done to that particular piano.

Best price? New piano delivered in the box to your home, no prep, yes best price!

Is that the best deal for you? No!

Buy the piano after all of the pre purchase prep work has been done first, then play the piano in the store to be sure that you are 100% satisfied before you complete the sale and take delivery of the piano.

We need more info especially if the piano is brand new or not.

What state of prep is it in?

How much are they asking for it?

Bear

Asking prices on pianos actually vary by location, inventory, the economy etc. just to mention a few. Your biggest enemy is getting in too big of a hurry. Enjoy your search, play a lot of pianos, which as you probably know, vary from one to another. You may end up purchasing a piano that is priced above your lowest offer, just because that one is more to your liking for whatever reason. I chose a used RX5 (4 Yr. old) sitting right next to a new one because to me, there was no comparison, and have never regreted it (not to mention saving some $$) and like it more every day. Everyone here would probably tell you to start with the Larry Fine book and go from there. Enjoy!

ucmerril,

Unfortunately some of the prices provided here in PW are not accurate (anybody has the freedom of posting any price). Avoid making the process frustrating by disregarding the lowest and highest price.
Congratulations the RX2 is a very nice choice.

Best Regards.

In Ohio, about 3 months ago, price quote before tax = 16K. I've seen posts on here giving prices below 14K, which might be possible, but it seems a bit low to me. The price in Larry Fine's book is around 24K, I think.

Hi All,

Need some advice since I went ahead and bought a new grand piano(Bergmann GT 150) one month ago and want to upgrade to a Kawai RX-2. Do you think if I return it and have them order the Kawai RX-2 will I be loosing $$. What I'm asking is what is the best way to approach this? ANY advice will be helpful.

I live in Northern NJ.

Thanks in advance

Merrill

My advice would be keep playing your current piano for a bit longer (2+ years) and save up more money for a bigger RX.

Dear ucmerrill,
Presumably, you want to know if you will be losing money on the trade in price of the Bergmann GT 150. It all depends on the dealer. He/she may be happy to return your full purchase price if you have had the piano for just a month and are upgrading to a more expensive piano.
I had a similar experience some years ago when I bought a Boston grand piano and after about a month decided to upgrade to a Boston the next size up. The dealer was most understanding and returned my full purchase price. Most dealers want to see their clients happy with their purchase.
I would politely explain to the dealer that you are not completely satisfied with the Bergmann piano and that you want to upgrade to the Kawai RX2. A preliminary phone call to initiate discussion and then a face to face meeting at some mutually convenient time with the dealer for further consideration should it be necessary.

Best of luck!

Robert.

It's likely you can make this trade-up, with the same dealer, without a problem. Yes, call first and make arrangements. You'll have to go in person anyway to play the RX2, to make sure it's really the right one for you. If the one you play in the showroom is the one you want, take the serial number down and make sure that is the one they deliver.

It's true that a longer piano will have a better (and louder) sound, especially at the very top and bottom notes, but not everyone is looking for that. I passed on the RX2 and RX3 when I was shopping and got the RX5 because it sounded best to me. But I played a lovely new RX2 the other day at my dealer's that sounded (and felt) much better to me than some much more expensive pianos.

It might pay you to take the time to really make sure. Buyer's remorse can be expensive...

Thanks all for your excellent suggestions. I stop by at the dealer and he is willing to work with me. So I mention the RX2 and RX3 and he will give me a quote by Wednesday. What would you consider a reasonable price for a new Kawi Rx3 and/or RX2?

Thanks

Merrill

It appears to be a buyer's market in some locales. I bought a new RX=2 in Tucson for $13,500 with just a little bit of haggling. The price included delivery and two tunings.

I purchased from Hachenberg's, an old, established Tucson Kawaii and Yamaha dealer that I can recommend without reservation. According to Mark, in better times, it would be unlikely to find the same piano for $16,000 in his store.

Do you think that $17,800 is a good deal for a new Kawi RX-3 after tax + delivery?
