I have a client with a well used 1982 Yamaha G2 grand. The hammers are worn quite flat with approximately 3/8 ths grooves in the middle section hammers. There would still be some felt left on the top hammers if they were to be filed maybe 1/16.
My questions are: What are the guidelines for deciding whether to get away with aggressive filing or replacing? Obviously if money isn't an issue, then replace. However is money is tight, then how far can a hammer wear before it is toast. If they were to replace, what would be a good choice of hammer? I have only done this procedure once and it was a long time ago.

Much appreciated.

When you say 3/8 grooves, do you mean flat and the length of the groove is 3/8?, or the depth of the groove is 3/8? In either case that's very significant wear, but it might lead to different answers...I'm curious...

If its a depth issue, the hammer is actually muting the string partially as it "strikes", conceptually a little like what the dampers do! You'd get some limited mileage out of filing but my money is on just replacing the set...if the 3/8th mark is across the hammer face, you might be in better shape...

Hammers are worn out when they no longer sound good, or when they cannot be regulated properly. However, neither of those conditions tend to occur when the client has money!

If they look anything like these hammers, then IMO it's probably time to replace them.

Sorry,I should have been clearer. I meant 3/8ths flat. the hammers don't sound bad, perhaps a bit dull. The regulation is off with let off quite wide partially due to missing felt and the knuckles are rather flat. with the action pulled, you really have to push hard on the keys to trip the jack and you can feel the jack drag across the knuckle because of the wear. I've suggested replacing the knuckles and doing a regulation but was uncertain what to do about the hammers. I plan to give quotes for both replacing and filing and see where it goes with that. Because replacing hammers is something I do not have a lot of experience with, I am looking for guidelines as to knowing when to swap out or file. In school, I was told if there is some felt left after filing the top treble hammers, then you could save the hammers.
Cheers

Great pictures 88 Key PianoPlayer. It boggles my mind to see to such wear at A0 and C1 where the felt is split to the moulding. What kind of music are they playing to wear out those keys in particular?
Cheers
