I am working on a Steinway Baby Grand built in 1917. Was a player at one time and the player is long gone.

While installing the action and making sure the pedals and rods all connect, I noticed that there may be a piece missing between the sustenutto rod on the action and where the rod from the pedal comes through the piano case. Right now nothing connects them. Just empty space between the end of the rod's hook and the rod through the case.

I have looked at a diagram of the Steinway action and see the rod on the action, but not what connects it to the rod coming through the case.

Any idea where I might see a picture or find this part?

If this isn't the right forum for this, please let me know.

Depends on the type of player.

Players actuated the pedal functions. Usually there was a retrofitted part that allowed for both the Player unit and a person playing to play the pedals.

A picture would help, but, certainly make and model of the player unit.

Also, there is a Mechanical Musical Instruments Forum here on PW, Also try your question there.

The part is called the sostenuto monkey. I do not think it was different on players, but you never can tell. They are available from Steinway, and possibly other suppliers.

Looks like I misread the question ...

Thanks BDB

Thanks. Perhaps that piece went missing when the player mechanism was removed.

I will contact Steinway about this part. I didn't see it on thier diagram, but could have just missed it.

Thanks again,'

Roy

There is also a long flat spring that screws to the keyframe and pushes down on the monkey.

Oh, stop monkeying around BDB. smile Such a "monkey business" these things can be. grin

I encountered a problem just today on a Hamburg Steinway sostenuto. It had moved just enough where it was clipping a few damper tabs holding them up only when the key was played. A simple adjustment solved the problem.

Then I have two pieces missing instead of one. I thought there had to be a spring involved to help raise the pedal until it was needed.

Just might be able to finish this thing up. I certainly appreciate the input.

Thanks,

Roy

Always enjoyed the name, sustenudo "monkey." Wonder which of the stuffed shirts at S&S thought that one up back in the dim mists of long ago. Rhesus or Gabon? Why not a sustenudo baboon? Or sustenudo oragutan? Or giraffe for that matter...

I'm one that can fix it but, never can remember how to spell it! Who's right, you or me? I can think of something else that my dad used to call a "monkey" but, it can't be discussed here... [Linked Image]

Greetings,
Reproducer monkeys are atypical. They operate at the bass end of the action, rather than at the break, and they have a larger wooden base. I have one, but it is out on lease and I haven't seen the monkey on it in years. The standard factory part will not fit.
Regards

Then I have an idea how to build a piece to do the job.

Thanks again for the information.
