Of the yamaha portable keyboards & D.P.'s, not consoles, I've been wondering why the s90es piano tone would be so great, being a synth/hybrid not evne strictly within the D.P. line, but it's no wonder. For instance vs. even their cp-300's 40mb sample- of what I.D.K.- but why save the s90es' 53mb S700 sample exclusively for a synth & not even in the top of the line D.P. with graded hammer action etc? No wonder the s90es is so popular, even if to serve as a D.P. only, might be worth it.

Not that the sample size directly determines what sounds good, but it at least should have sopme relationship to things like how long a note rings before it loops into a dead monotone. I can't even FIND sample source/size information on my p-140 (P-120 was 22mb), but just considering the upcoming p-155 with four layers which should be a good increase in itself, but I'd be surprised if yamaha allowed it to have as nice a piano as their top of the line CP models, overall- forget about the s90es (unless the next version of that is on the way too)!

Just something I found odd, seeing that "53mb s700" in the product descriptions for their top of the line synth, but on specs pages of their (strictly) digital pianos keeping such info on the D.L. I guess they have their reasons, not necessarily because- but at least we can buy it in module form!

I've always had the same thought too. One thing that was interesting was an email response I received many months ago from a Yamaha rep for portable keyboards regarding the YPG-635 and his saying that half of its total ROM was dedicated to its Grand Piano sound. I was always curious how much "MB" were in this patch. It is strange that their seemingly best piano sound is in a synth.

I use the S700 sample set in my Motif ES all the time, although my samples are less than 20 mb, they are still awesome.
Anyway, to answer your question, I think the reason is obvious. Think of this way, who are using the S90? Pro musicians who play gigs or record albums. These people mostly use top of the line PA or sound system. On the other hand, who use cabinet style digital pianos? Most of them are young students, or amateur musicians, who mostly use the built in speakers on their pianos.
So, S90 users will appreciate a tiny bit of sound improvement, while most cabinet users will be more than happy with a decent sound.
