Here's P*S's take on the first movement of the Op. 10 no. 1.

Molto Allegro e con Brio

He has made a couple of very small changes to how he plays it since this recording, but this is pretty close. This is one of his current competition pieces.

Just curious about how teachers teach this piece. Most of the student recordings I have heard/seen take it at a statelier pace, yet many of the pros (Pollini, for instance) go at this speed or even faster; truly molto allegro e con brio.

BTW, there is a nice lecture up on the web by Schiff that works through the entire sonata.

P.S. This might belong on the member recordings section, yet posting something like this to that forum is like entering a dead zone. [Linked Image]

Hi:

This is a reply to a very old message that I never saw. My teacher for this piece (it was Lee Luvisi at Brevard) wanted the first movement fast, like your guy played it. That's how I played it. It's certainly not all that difficult technically. The second movement is harder both technically and musically. You have to really work to keep the tempo slow while also maintaining momentum. That kind of patience is hard for an adolescent boy.

Re the third movement. Mr. Luvisi, who was a gentle soul in the studio, looked me straight in the eye and said "It's harder than heck." I did eventually learn it, but after that summer was over. My "home teacher" was a firm advocate of learning entire sonatas, not only single movements.

I hope your doing well. College is progressing nicely here. Greer will be a senior history major at W&L. She will take an immediate graduate degree in education She has been studying piano with Prof. Gaylard since her first year and has continued to progress. After a lot of agonizing, younger daughter Emily decided to stay right here at USC in Columbia and attend the Honors College. She loves it, and the scholarships are great. Her education is completely free. She is double-majoring in math and religion and aspires to be . . . I don't know . . . a consulting humanist or something. She is truly excelling and will likely have exciting graduate school opportunities.

Catch me up with Anthony. I recall that he was heading off in the engineering direction, at Florida? Is that right?
