2010 Chopin Celebratory Ecitals Chopin is having a very special birthday next year, 1st March 2010. It will be 200 years since he was born in the little house in Zelazowa Wola and there will be celebrations all over the world. To make a special Piano World commemoration, we are intending to hold two ecitals for Chopin’s birthday. The first will be held on 22nd February 2010 which is still believed by some to be his real date of birth. This will be our third Mazurkathon – for what better tribute to Chopin than a performance of these incredibly individual works, which are so redolent of his love of Poland? Additionally, we will be holding an ecital on 1st March 2010 to which we invite larger submissions from more advanced players. There are plenty of those! Eg: Ballades, Scherzi, Impromptus, Polonaises, Rondos, movements from the Sonatas and individual works such as the Barcarolle, the Berceuse, the Tarantella, the Fantaisie, the Concert Allegro and the Bolero etc. There is plenty to choose from. There are also a very few shorter and easier stand-alone works too, such as album leaves and the Cantabile etc. So something for (almost) everyone. If there are any vocalists amongst you (and I know we have at least one!) you are welcome to submit some of Chopin’s beautiful Polish Songs. OK, I know this is Piano World, but the Songs do have piano accompaniments Excluded are these smaller works: Etudes, Nocturnes, Preludes, Waltzes and Mazurkas. Exceptions: there are a few gaps from the previous Prelude and Etude ecitals so if anyone can fill those that would be very nice for the 1st March 2010 concert. These gaps are: Preludes Opus 28 no 13 and no 17, Prelude Opus 45, Etudes Opus 10 no 8 and no 11, Etudes Opus 25 numbers 2, 3, 5 and 10. We are limiting participation to one work per performer in these special anniversary concerts, so that more people have a chance to take the piece they love. So, Chopin-lovers out there, you have a wide choice! Book your favourite piece and start practising now. (Some of the Mazurkas were booked previously so they are listed below as they will be reserved for those who wanted them, unless they cancel). Pieces Booked for the Spring 2010 200th Anniversary Chopin EcitalsMazurkas (22nd Feb): 7/3 - Mati 7/4 - Mistaya 17/1 - Rustyfingers 30/2 - Gabtytu 30/4 - Schubertian 33/1 - Piano&Violin 50/1 - Schubertian 56/1 - Schubertian 56/2 - Schubertian 56/3 - Secondo 59/2 - Chardonnay 63/1 - Secondo 68/3 - cscl 68/4 - Bassio [Schubertian seems to have booked loads, so maybe I have made a mistake. Or if someone else wants one of his, you could try negotiating!]Other works: Op 11 Concerto, Larghetto - Frycek Mazurkas not available as already performed in our ecital series: Op 6/1, 7/1, 7/2, 17/2, 17/3, 17/4, 24/1, 24/2, 24/3, 24/4, 30/1, 30/3, 33/3, 41/1, 41/2, 41/4, 59/3, 63/2, 63/3, 67/2, 67/3, 68/3, 67/4 Please reply to this post if you want to book a piece for the special 2010 Anniversary Ecitals – and I will keep the list updated on this very first post. The Nocturne Ecital is still going ahead in October as planned, and has a separate thread.

What a very lovely choice, Frycek. I've duly noted it. I forgot to mention the Concertos - are you hiring an orchestra? Will your Zoom cope???

The larghetto is really a nocturne and stands very well on its own.
Slow down and do it right.

I'd love to have a go at op 9 no 3 if I can. It's a bit above my level really but with a whole year to work on it, I'm confident that I can do it justice.

I promise to submit a song, and to make it one where I can play the accompaniment myself, so that it still "counts" as piano.
I intend to have a much better command of Polish by this time next year!
It scares me to think of the nocturnes as "smaller" works... I know they are, really, but some of them loom pretty large over me....

Excluded are these smaller works: Etudes, Nocturnes, Preludes, Waltzes and Mazurkas. Has this changed?

Excluded are these smaller works: Etudes, Nocturnes, Preludes, Waltzes and Mazurkas. Has this changed? I can't imagine that it has; the point was not to duplicate works that have been already played in recent e-citals.
It seems the biggest complaint with the new forum interface is that it's hard to read, at least in the default typeface (which is, IMO, horrible). Maybe Mary-Rose's original post would have been clearer about the exclusions and exceptions if it were in Verdana like this one!
This is the relevant "fine print":
Excluded are these smaller works: Etudes, Nocturnes, Preludes, Waltzes and Mazurkas. FWIW, an additional gap piece is the D-flat major etude from Trois Nouvelles Etudes.

Dear Sotto, thank you for clarifying my meaning. I agree about the font but haven't got to grips with the new format yet. Green Rain - we have already done an Etudes ecital (with a few gaps) so I am afraid we can't include 10/3 this time. But there is so much other choice I am sure you will find something both within your grasp and inspiring.
Sotto - so which of your repertoire are you going to prepare for this special event? (Thanks for pointing out the missing Nouvelle Etude also.)
Oh no - I have just found out that one can't edit old posts. I was hoping to keep the running order of our Spring ecitals up to date on the front page. How annoying! I will re-do the list of bookings in a minute

I'd appreciate it if you'd put me down for Op. 44. I'm fairly certain no one else would want it, and I may have a chance at having it ready by spring of 2010. Of course, I will back out with as much advance notice as I can if it looks to be impossible. If someone else does in fact want it, feel free to PM me about it. Still got to start my nocturne for the fall Nocturne Recital...

We are already getting some wonderful suggestions - this is going to be an amazing ecital!
