Is there anything in the rules/guidelines for Western music which could help me to choose whether to notate a song as Gb instead of F#?

If it doesn't modulate it doesn't really matter, go with whatever you prefer writing/reading.

On the other hand, if it modulates to the dominant, writing in F# major would mean adding another #, whereas Gb major dominant (Db) means cancelling a flat. It then depends on the context as to which gives a clearer line.


Or you could transpose the entire thing up or down a semitone and save people the headaches laugh

If you are descending chromatically, use flats, and for ascending, sharps. This avoids unneeded naturals.

That's true for accidentals, but not really for key signatures, otherwise you'd have to change key everytime your melody changed direction

I tend to prefer sharps. I know that brass players are driven crazy by sharps, and strings players hate seeing too many flats

I say transpose it up a half step or down. If there's too many accidentals than drop the key signature. But if it's for piano only than follow the modulation advice, (I agree with it). Most instruments beside the piano have a hard time tuning to too many sharps or flats unless they are well versed. Usually the experienced have no problem. But the Harp is another story. It's a pain to have so many sharps and flats to change around for a harpist.

I ALWAYS write my pieces with a lot of accidentals. When I do try to change it or modulate by half steps, for some reason the harmonies don't have the same effect in the different key. Maybe it's just a mental thing...who knows? I figure, if good performers can do it, I'm not going to worry about mediocre performers.

I agree with that. Most of my pieces, I can't play as well as I'd like. Though My favorite key to write in is, D Harmonic minor with a flat 2 and a raised 3rd. I have been trying forever to transpose the key and still have it sound as erie. I love writing erie pieces. Sometimes a piece just has too be played in a specific key.

Since I am only a composer. I have to change keys to fit the instruments of my peers at college. Those words by me previously were taken from them. The college is having me take piano lessons, but I think I am too old to ever get really good at it. Like my fingers just wont play fast even if I know the notes.

As a cellist, I do hate flats. laugh

Because... a cello has four strings: C, G, D, A. In order to play a G#, for example, all you have to do is place your finger at the top of the G string, but in order to play Gb, you have to find the note on the C string (which isn't so hard once you get used to thinking about it this way, but it is a pain for the first few years at least).
