these songs have moved me many times over
the years. Its one of the things I love about
music..it helps me feel, release and heal.

"Heart Alone" by Bill Staines (legendary folk songwiter/folksinger: About the life of a race horse from birth to the race track to being a sire; the lyrics are wonderfully crafted, very visual and stirring. I think this song is better than that Run For The Roses Song" by Dan Fogelberg (not a bad song but Staines song has more meat to it imo.)

My Choir sang this for a cancer walk 2 years after my grandmother died of ovarian cancer.
I could barely could sing the words; I didn't realize I still was greiving her death.

Strange Fruit (Sung By Billie Holiday)
The saddest song for last.
I cried the first time I read through this song, the lyrics stirred my soul. I read the book about the tune later.

Most recent, the one at Christmas about the child asking if they can "buy these shoes" for their mommy. Can someone help with the title?

Well, we certainly differ there, hanna2222. I very seldom get that effect these days. Then again, it has to be said that my crying reflex probably seems perverse to most people. I went through several years of tragedies and deaths involving people close to me and did not cry, but wept when my father's cat died.

It's hard to describe my reactions to music, especially to my own music. I'm probably just a cold fish.

Oh...I remember the one about the Christmas
shoes...it made me cry too, but I don't
remember the name of it.

Amazing Grace has often made me cry.

"Heart Alone" I have yet to play all the way through without weeping. I weep when they play "My Old Kentucky Home For The Derby" also.
It goes along at a fast clip and Staines plays it fingerstyle on the guitar but I have played it on piano as fast arrpegiated chord patterns (just galloping along). But I usually stop to wipe some tears.

You Raise Me Up; our choir has a version that J. Groban doesn't have (a second verse). Josh Groban has a violin solo in lieu of the second verse which is a shame as the second verse is incredible.

2nd verse left out of Grobans recording: There is no life, no life without it's hunger. Each restless heart beats so imperfectly. But when you come, and I am filled with wonder, sometimes I think I glimpse eternity.

Strange Fruit--- Billie Holiday
A song about lynchings in the south.
Very sad song with haunting images, shook me to my core. I then understood from those lyrics what my dear friend who was a black musican from the south had tried to tell me about what it was like back then.

That book about the song is very interesting. Billie fought very hard to record that song about lynching in the south, and there were people that were very upset about her singing that "protest song". The writer was a white man, he was Jewish.
He and wife adopted the Rosenberg children after their parents were executed for spying. He also wrote "The house I Live In" recorded by Frank Sinatra.

I have been listening to Billie Holiday lately; she was an amazing vocalist and songwriter. Her style is so different. And when I hear her I get this feeling that she is bearing so much of her own raw emotions in her recordings, especially in her sad songs. She had such a hard life, raped at 10 and died at 44. Addicted to Heroin.

After you get through with "Strange Fruit" look up "Them There Eyes" by Billie Holiday to give you a more upbeat song to balance out the so profoundly sorrowful "Strange Fruit".

Hearing the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.3 in a performance by John Lill in the Great Hall at Lancaster University. It was the most exquisitely beautiful piano playing I have ever heard.

*laughs* I'm a guy. Guy like rock. Rock no cry. :p

Very few songs have ever made me cry. Among them are (in chronological order):

1. Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
2. Cat in the Cradle (My Dad almost died when I was 3 years old...and I mean that they were estimating how long he had to live in hours and minutes...so this one still hits a nerve....)
3. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (*cry* What about Daddy?) *laughs* Well, that's what I used to think! :p
4. The f'ing theme from "Titanic" for some stupid reason...still can't figure that one out....
5. "Last Kiss" (*but only by Pearl Jam)
6. The ending song in "Lord of the Rings"...I forget the title, sorry....

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

*Had a dream my girlfriend (high school) died in a car accident. That song was playing in the dream on the radio in her car. In the dream, I was awoken by a phone call at like 6 in the morning. That day was a school day, and I woke up to my radio playing that song.... It just kinda blind-sided me. (Plus that was the year I had some very interesting dreams come true...like, all of them. So, it kinda scared me that morning. )

I normally don't post in this forum, but the song that gets me is a country song..."How Can I Help You Say Goodbye". It always reminded me of my mother when I heard it. She passed away earlier this year and the song really hit home at that point. Still difficult to listen to.

The end song to "Pay it Forward" never fails (especially with the movie playing)

I can't listen to this song without crying. Usually the music that gets to me is when there's a union of music and lyrics – especially sad lyrics.

Today marks one year since I lost my "Arpeggio" – my dearly loved Pekingese. It makes this song even more emotional for me today.

This song was written in memory of Cal Francis DiFalco’s “Billy” and my precious “Arpeggio”. We have two versions – one for each of them.

Arpeggio always sat next to me when I composed. I can’t believe how much I miss her.

I don't know that this brings me to tears, but it certainly brings on deep melancholy and yearning introspection.

Johnny Boy, Sorry to hear about your dog. Your composition is beautiful. I almost lost my cat last week and took a chance on a $350 procedure. I left him at the vet thinking that may be the last time I ever saw him and I cried for two days straight. When he was overnight at the vet, it felt like something was missing. He hangs out with us a lot. When the kids sit down he sits on their lap. He even used to sit on top of my upright when piano students came during their lesson. They loved that. I'm grateful to have him as long as he doesn't get back intot he same boat healthwise again. I didn't realize what an attachment one gets to a pet until this experience.

Our pets are family members by every meaning of the word.

I'm glad your cat is okay Sara. Our peke was 15 years old. We knew she wouldn't be with us a whole lot longer.

We adopted a new peke. She can't replace Arpeggio, but she does fill some of the emptiness from our loss.
