Can anyone recommend a Diana Krall CD? Which one(s) best showcase(s) her piano playing?

Thanks!

How about the DVD of Diana Krall 'Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival' some good camara shots of her figuring which isn't always the case with camera angles on recorded pianists. A huge audience too.

Diana is a very talented pianist of the current style of middle of the road jazz piano.

I have the DVD for Live in Paris and it's awesome!

Do you have a broadband connection Mark? If so, try out the Rhapsody service. For less than $9/month, you can listen to all the music you want. Krall is well represented with 9 of her albums and a bunch of compilations.

This woman is gorgeous. Sadly recently snapped up! I have Live in Paris too and it is very good, especially as it has some candid shots at the end which are memorable.

I havent seen the Montreal one, but will look out for it.

Kind regards

Adrian

Thanks, all. I'll check out Live in Paris on her website.

This kind of leads to a more general question: Is there any advantage one way or the other to having the CD or just downloading it?

Download is often compressed, depending on source - and maybe compressed again in your music software.

You have to use computer as playback source or CD burner.

I find it OK for the odd track, but otherwise I prefer the CD and can then copy it into itunes (with zero compression) and play it on any CD player.

Personally, I don't hear any difference. The streaming audio is at 192kbps. The only CD that I've had to buy in the last year was the Oh Brother soundtrack.

I have both DVD's and love them both... but I think imo the Montreaux Jazz festival DVD I like the best. You can really see the interaction between her and her band on that dvd, and the close ups on her playing are wonderful. At a few points in the concert you can even see her lead sheet with just chord and bars written out.

The "Live In Paris" DVD has a bit too many movie scenery scenes going on which takes away from the concert feel for me. Both albums sound great. Love her cover of "East of the Sun, West of the Moon".

CD's "The Look Of Love" and "When I look Into Your Eyes" are my favorite CD's.

Her new album "The Girl In The other Room" is an interesting "listen". She wrote wrote half of the music on it(6 out of 12 tunes) but not all the tunes; and her hubby Elvis Costella wrote the lyrics as co-writer. I like her covers on "Stop This World" by Mose Allison and "Temptation" by Tom Waits.

The Christmas Album she now has out took me a little time to get into; but now I can say I do love it for a Christmas Album.

Diana Krall has a gorgeous set of piano hands; I am quite envious her long slender fingers.

Diana Krall is a complete package musician wise. She has the looks, the chops, and the voice. She could do so much with all that she has going for her as a musician. The Steinways she plays always sound so nice.

I would love to see her play and sing someday live in concert. For now I have my DVDs.

BTW my Costco was playing the "Live In Paris DVD" on their big plasma screen tvs. It was nice to see people taking a listen; some shoppers who had never heard her before were ready to buy the DVD on the spot.

The Montreaux Jazz Festival DVD best showcases her playing, but the "Live In Paris" DVD isn't a slouch either.

Another female pianist/singer I admire is the late Jeri Southern from ND. Sadly; she quit her career at a very young age when she was unhappy with having to front the band rather than playing the piano and singing in more intimate settings with a small combo.

The trend back then was to have the pretty female singers up front of the band. Listen to her playing on her recordings to how she uses the piano to accompany herself. She also had serious chops and could play some seriously advanced classical pieces very well. I found a CD of hers at the library and was hooked. Her recordings of "You Better Go Now" and "No Moon At All" are my favorites.

I don't think Diana Krall has yet reached her potential as a singer, composer and player; which is why I feel she is such an exciting new singer/pianist to watch and listen to.

It is good to see her Diana Krall on the morning TV shows circuit; this sort of music imo beats the junk that folks like Jessica Simpson put out ( the christmas show Jessica Simpson did with hubby Nick and sister Ashlee last year was the worst christmas program I have ever seen in my life). Jessica managed to slaughter some really great Christmas songs in short order. jmo.

Jessica is lucky to have a dad with too much influence in the entertainment media.... she really is not deserving of as much air time as she is getting. Meanwhile more deserving artists are probably being kept in the shadows.

Alas, I digressed. I won't speak the J-word again.
Back to thinking about Diana Krall; one very talented lady to enjoy listening to and watching also.
jmo, that's all it is though.

I have my own weapon of mass destruction in the form of a "teenage" German Shepherd. Anything she spies and can get ahold of is fair game.

For anyone interested the Diana Krall, 'Montreal Jazz Festival' DVD, it is available from Amazon in the UK. I buy almost all of my recordings from them A very efficient organisation. IMHO.

FYI:

Netflix carries alot of "music dvds" including some of the live concerts mentioned above. I just got a subscription for Xmas and found this fact to be a huge benefit!

Both my wife and I love one of her first albums...All for You 3hearts ...A dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio. It's clean and simple. Also have "Only Trust Your Heart" and "Love Scenes". We saw her in 2004? (Toledo) and we thought there was TOO much sound, we missed the clean and simple sound. frown Sorry Diana!! and I agree, she's hot in every way!!! (hope my wife's not lookin over my shoulder laugh )
