not in Japan anymore
Recently there have been a lot of discussions in the Piano Forum and the AB Forum about mics and about recording. (I confess, some of those have been instigated by me!) So I'm wondering what people who hang out at this forum do for recording. For people who record themselves playing an acoustic piano, please tell me what you use. (I am not asking about people recording from a digital piano because I assume that you're just plugging something into the piano itself as opposed to going through a mic)

1) Are you recording analog, like on a multitrack recorder, and then switching to digital (or not switching at all)?

2) Are you recording onto something digital? What kind of recording device are you using?

3) Do you record straight onto your computer or use some other equipment?

3) What kind of mic(s) do you use? Any preamps or other equipment? Where do you place the mics? If you have an upright, do you open the lid? Take of the front cover?

4) Do you use any particular software, for the recording itself? For editing?

5) Are you satisfied with the results you're getting?

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions!

I use a variety of microphones depending on my needs at the time. Among my favorites are:
- Royer SF12 ribbon mic (use about 10-12" above hammers or as a room mic several feet back)
- AKG 414 TLII large diaphragm condenser mics (spaced pair approx. 10" above strings in "omni")
- Shure KSM141 small diaphragm condensers (spaced pair in "omni" or XY in cardioid slightly outside the curve of the piano)
- I'm looking at trying the Gefell 930's, though I haven't yet.
I use a variety of mic pres -- again depending on the sound I'm looking for. My "go-to" preamps would be (in no particular order):
Great River MP2NV
Earthworks 1022
Buzz Audio MA2.2
Vintech 473
Avalon 737
Everything is recorded with no compression or EQ through an Apogee AD16X converter and monitored back through the DA16X.
The Apogees connect to the computer through a Lynx AES16 card.
I just upgraded my computer this week. I now use a Macintosh dual 2.7 GHz G5 (which just replaced a dual 1.25 GHz G4) running Digital Performer 4.5.
I monitor through KRK V8's, my powered ADAM's, and Sony MDR7506 phones.
Am I happy with the results? Usually...but I'm always looking to improve.

Obviously this system is overkill for a lot of people. But I thought I'd post it for those who might be interested.
