Just a reminder to all... who have a favorite pop/rock pianist/entertainer.

I will be tallying up the nominations for this thread of our favorite pop/rock pianists after January 14th.

So if you have a favorite pop/rock piano player/entertainer you need to put in a post for that player on this thread and it needs to have a date of January 14th your time zone.

I have been ill so it may take me a day or two add up the nominations and then get the official voting poll set up for the official vote for 2007.

So many good pianists here have only one nomination posted for them.. it would be helpful to find those who are seconded or thirded so we can narrow the field down for the election polling.

So if you haven't nominated anyone yet... you should do so before January 15th. Also, you can feel free to change any nomination you have made until the 15th.

Have a great weekend!

Yeah, this list seems to lean heavily toward 'progressive rock' as opposed to the 'pop rock' of Billy Joel and Elton John.

If you think about it, it's tough to pit the 2 styles together because the demands are quite different...

How do you juxtapose a catchy Billy Joel hook with a Keith Emerson re-working of Ginastera, and then try to justify which is 'better'??

This is such a subjective topic! Right off the bat in discussions like this, it's probably hopeless to try and determine what constitutes the best pianist. Are we talking the best songwriting pianist or are we evaluating a pianist from a technical skill point of view? I started playing piano because I heard Keith Emerson's piano (and keyboard) music but through the years my tastes seem to have changed my focus from the purely technical skill involved to skill in melody and harmony but still with a high degree of technical skill. Tony Banks comes to mind as a master of melody and harmony.

I know this sounds like blasphemy to some but except for a handful of songs, I've never been really enamored with Elton John's music. Good songwriter (once with Bernie Taupin's help) but a top rock pianist? I don't think so. As a matter of fact, although people cite 'Saturday Night' as an example of his rock writing one might keep in mind that this is a 1972 song. I find recent Elton John music pretty bland most of the time. Billy Joel is a better pianist and solo songwriter. T Lavitz of the Dregs is another fine rock pianist who really rocks. Remember people, these are only my opinions.
