Hello,
I'm a rookie piano shopper and am trying to get any info I can on a used 44" Kawai studio, approximately 10 years old. It's a model 603MP.

I'm specifically curious if it has a laminated or solid spruce soundboard...is there an easy way to tell from looking? If anyone has an idea on value, I'd appreciate that too. The owners are asking $1800. It's been played very little and tuned ZERO times since being bought new. One other bit of info I noticed was that it was placarded, "Assembled in the USA"

Thanks very much for any input!

Jim

Get the serial number and one of us will looke it up. Never trust what the seller tells you.
600 series had a solid board. Think it was 42" console. Not tuning for that many years is not a good thing. Private party price would be more like $1400-$1500 on West coast. Get it checked out.

Thanks very much! The serial number is: A63438

I didn't measure it myself, but the tag which came with it from the original retailer said 44". I'm definitely going to have any piano checked by a tech before I purchase, but of course, if it's a model to steer clear of, I won't even go through that.

I was afraid of the fact that it hasn't been tuned. I guess it would be up to a tech to see what kind of shape it's in and confirm it could be brought up to the proper standard.

Thanks again for the reply!

Hi Jimboa,

There is no way I would attempt to debate with any of the pro tech’s on this forum, but not being tuned in 10 years is not a death certificate for a piano; although it may not necessarily be good for an acoustic piano not to be tuned regularly (at least two times a year), I know form my own experience that once you raise the pitch to standard pitch and keep them tuned from that point on, you can still have a great piano.

It may cost you more initially for the pitch raise but you can use that point as a strategy to try and negotiate a better selling price with the owner.

Of course, this is just my .02 and is probably worth what you paid or it laugh .

Best regards,

Rickster

Yes, not tuning for 10 years is not a death certificate. Usually can be reversed by a few pitch raises and tunings.
Produced late in the year 1995 in Kawai's Lincolnton, North Carolina factory.
Worth looking into.
