For those who haven't seen it check the movie "Be Kind Rewind", in a way, a homage to Fats, and a great comedy too.

Hi Pianists,
Here are my favorites. I just wish had biggger hands to reach 10ths. Or be able to play and drink like he did (this guy knew how to party). Or write as many songs. Or swing so hard. Or..anyway:

Jitterbug Waltz, Handful of Keys, Black and Blue, Ain't Misbehavin, The Joint is Jumpin'

Those of you not familiar with Fats there are lots of good compiltations, try to find one with at least a few solo tracks.

the book 'The Joy of Jazz' has a piece I am learning called 'Sneakin' home'. Sounds awesome, at least when my teacher plays it! :p

I'm a big fan of Fats Waller, love his playing and singing and I find it very difficult to pick my favorite five. These are certainly among my favorites though.

Viper's Drag

Two Sleepy People

I can't give you anything but love

It's a sin to tell a lie

Your feets too big

Ahhh Two Sleepy People, I'd forgotten that one...I've a transcription somewhere from Peterson playing and it's gorgeous music. Must dig it out tonight.

Here's me practising the first half of Jitterbug Waltz as played by Tatum:

The other half is still very much a work in progress...

I do not think Fats ever wrote anything that was not 100% the tops. His singing was excellent too and at the same time as playing and making faces at those near to him on the piano.

A great jazz man, who like so many, died far too young and in preventable circumstances.

5 at random :- I WISH I WERE TWINS ; THE MINOR DRAG; AINT MISBEHAVIN; MY VERY GOOD FRIEND THE MILKMAN SAYS ; SWEETSUE ;

In actual fact all Fat's work was extremely great. Simple but incomparable. A great inspirational musician. I have listened to him from being a child thanks to my mother.
