Well, two questions.

Thanks to someone's recommendation here, I got two CD's (amazon downloads) by Ruth Laredo, My First Piano Recital and My Second Piano Recital.

The second one has a Brahms piece referred to only as "Waltz in Intermezzo in Eb Major." I like it, and it sounds within reach for me.

Question 1: Does anyone know any better way to refer to this so I can find the sheet music? Alternatively, can anyone direct me to a source for this sheet music?

Question 2: Can anyone comment on how difficult this piece might really be? Sometimes I listen to something and it sounds not that hard, but then it turns out to be much harder than it sounds.... (For reference, I am currently working my way through the Bach 6 Little Preludes, and although it is slow, I am comfortable with the level of difficulty they present.)

Thanks,

Mark

I have Waltzes and Intermezzos, but no "Waltz in Intermezzo". Do you know the Opus number?

LaValse, that's it!!

Beautiful performance of it, too. Thank you!

P.S. It does look a little more difficult than it sounds... frown

Hi Mark,

Yes, it looks like grade 8 or something doesn't it... frown I would guess it's the voicing that makes it tricky...(?)

HELLO!

http://www.carnegiehall.org/article/box_office/events/evt_9617.html?selecteddate=02032008

EDIT: Well...I guess when a pianist of this calibre is playing a great Beethoven concerto in Carnegie Hall...one needs to buy tickets sooner than three days before the event. Alas, nothing but nosebleed seats left.

Well, anyway, LaValse, thanks for turning me on to a really tremendous player. Maybe I'll catch her next time she's in town....

What elegant sound! Interesting wikipedia article. I wondered about her mouth moving - did you notice it said that she "tastes" sounds and sees colors while playing?

Rather spell binding and sensurous as a musician. She has gained my attention from her introduction in this topic, although it was Ruth Laredo who was mentioned as the performer in the CD's that J. Mark bought.

It will be interesting to compare their interpretations.

I am wondering if she is mouthing the words that go with this piece? It appears to be a lullaby helping a crying child go to sleep?

I've noticed before that she often lets her hair flop over her face when performing - and when you do get a glimpse, she's mouthing away merrily; whatever it takes I say - artistic licence; love it...

I've watched some on-line piano competitions recently and while I hesitate to say this because they all play light years ahead of what I'll ever be able to do - they do all look the same - but perhaps that's because I can't see the subtlety as a beginner. A bit like the English when they meet our sheep (for the first time)...

She doesn't hum like Gould did. I returned the first album of his that I purchased many years ago because I thought there was something wrong with recording. The next one was the same and then I found out that he hums very audibly while playing . . .

J. Mark is done in. I showed my husband some of Helene's videos and he knows why!
