Tonight I had my first lesson in 8months with a new teacher. I'm just home and I think that WE both will get on well together.

He encouraged te to play a few pieces and gave me positive feedback. He was able to assess within a short time that I was working on pieces above my standard and told me that it would lead to frustration.

He could see that I had a good grasp of the theory but was lacking in aspects of rhythm, timing, dynamics, fingering etc.

We spent some time talking about what I wanted to achieve and we quickly established that a solid foundation needed to be established before I attempted difficult pieces.

He has given me exercises and a few basic pieces to work on until my next lesson.

I'm pleased with him.

Believe it or last night during my lesson my teacher introduced me to counting. Previously I never saw the connection - he was able to get across the technique involved and it makes a lot of sense. It reminds me of keyboardklutz who once told me to 'tap my foot' - now I get it!

Here's what happens with lessons: Your teacher tells you, you try it, you lose it, months later (or even years later) you stumble upon it and say to yourself "So that's what he was talking about!"

keyboardklutz, my teacher was impressed by how much I knew last night at my first lesson yet surprised at how much basic information I was missing - counting, timing and fingering.........

That sounds like it's gonna be a good class. I am about to have my very first piano lesson. Just wait for my 'prospective' teacher to confirm the date. Really excited. laugh Hope it's great like yours.

TinyHands, I've been playing around with various on-line options - youTube, video downloads etc and to be honest I personally think they are no substitute for one to one lessons.

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do.

The discipline of weekly lessons is hard to beat. I have finger strength exercise, theory, one piece to learn and one piece to prepare for my next lesson so it will be exciting.

Congratulations RC. It sounds like you a great first lesson. I am much like you. Had enough skills to make a limited decent sound but all the basics were missing. Before I started lessons last year I was just playing to the tune in my head, I could never have worked a piece cold. I'm very excited for you, and to you TinyHands. Wishing you both tons of success.

I had my first lesson with a new teacher last night. No gap - I had a lesson with my previous teacher last week. But what a difference. My new teacher is no nonsense, no chit chat, all business. She dove right in with the books I brought and the 45 minutes flew right by.

She also said the material I was working on was difficult for the amount of time I had been studying.

She is very attentive, commenting as I played, and I already feel like I am looking at my music differently.

Maybe she isn't as friendly as my previous teacher, but she is certainly much more professional (and more expensive!).

Last night was my second lesson. The teaching piano was in need of tuning so I the pleasure of playing my teachers new Yamaha Grand Piano, it was so nice.

He observed me play and said that although I had made a good attempt he wanted to see some 'expression' in my work. He demonstrated this to me.

He asked me to work on areas in each piece and done some work on finger strength, loud and soft playing and sight-reading at speed. He is trying to develop my sight reading skills and wants me to do this as quick as I feel comfortable with it.

He's a very good teacher. He isn't pushing pieces but exercises that develop technique and style.
