I always liked Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. Does anyone have a recommendation for sheet music for the keyboard for this piece (intermediate level)? Downloadable would be nice....

Thanks for any help.

Mark,

Coincidentally, I am working on the Alfred Masterworks edition of Jesu. My teacher says that he thinks this is the best arrangement he has found.

Dame Myra Hess' transcription is probably the best, but it's difficult:

Bach-Hess

There are easier versions here:

Jesu Joy of Man\'s Desiring

I found a link on music notes with a preview if you want to play it. Not sure what level but it sounded nice. Maybe early Intermediate? not sure but take a lookey

My first post!

Anyhow, I've had the Hess transcription for many years. (I paid US$1.00 for it from Oxford Press.) I haven't played for 25 years, and then I got my Baldwin M4 back. So I'm really re-learning almost everything.

Having said that, I don't find the Hess too difficult. I recently had my piano regulated for the first time, and that seemed to help immensely in bringing out the inner voices of the theme.

J.Mark:

Today is your lucky day because I have an improvised version of this piece that is one of the most beautiful renditions I have ever heard.

No, it is not my own composition, but I am trying to create a version very similar to this one.

I have the CD in my truck and I will get it in a day or so and post up this version of this piece for you.

I promise you will be *blown away* by what this gal has done with this piece. It is really incredible!

I do have the sheet music to this piece from www.musicnotes.com but it does'nt compare with the version I am going to post for you.

Stay tuned and check back tomorrow, you will be pleasantly surprised!

Hey, thanks for all the responses, everyone. The Hess arrangement doesn't look too bad, but then, I've more than once thought something looked ok on paper and then founding actually playing it was a different matter. smile

Anyway, I will probably get several arrangements and see what clicks. I'm in no great rush, and have several other pieces I'm working on.

Hunky -- I'm looking forward to your post!

Mark

Monica, as dopey as this sounds, I forgot the name of this girl (young woman), that performs this piece but her improvised rendition of it gives me chills.

You know how much I like to improvise a tune and she does exactly what I am trying to do; the only problem is that she is SO much more advanced at doing this as well as having a lot of formal training at it.

The CD is in my Ford supercrew truck cd changer which is a pain in the rump to get too since it is burried deep under the center console and a hassle to get out.

I've been needing an excuse to dig that thing out to change the CD's anyway so this is the perfect opportunity. I will have this young composers improvised version of this piece posted up this evening and I'm sure you will all be very impressed with it.

This is such a beautiful piece and she (I know, "mystery woman"!!) makes it even that much nicer.

Stay tuned, I've gotta go right now as the concrete guys are pouring our driveway now!!.

Crap!

My CD won't let me download this piece onto my hard drive. I can play the CD on my computer in "real player", as well as any cd player, however, when I go to copy it to an mp3 file, it won't let me. It will only copy it as a "cda" file.

Maybe someone more computer savy than me can figure this out, or possibly, there may be some type of piracy software encoded onto the CD that prevents me from copying it.

Anyway, here is the info:

The pianist name is Gabriela Montero and her album is called Improvistations. The first track on this album is her improvised version of Jesus to man and it is really fantastic. At first, the piece seems like it will be the same old version, but give it a minute or so and it gets "hauntingly beautiful".

Can someone possibly help me out and either find this piece to post in an mp3 format..(anyone have a Rhapsody subscription)?.

Like I said I can't seem to copy it onto my hard drive but maybe someone else has it or can get it to share with us....sorry!

Copy protection, eh?

Try FreeRip to make the MP3 file.

If that doesn't work, open Audacity, select "Stereo Out" or "Wave Out" or whatever it's called for recording, press Record, play the CD, and finally export as MP3.

Obviously, I have to add that you can only make this copy for personal use and not for sharing on the net. laugh

Yea, I know. Its kind of hard to remember that after the Napster "free for all" several years ago!.

Anyway, I'm not really sure now how I can *legally* post this piece without spending 30 days in the hole!!.

Sorry folks for getting your hopes up; however, those of you who do have a Rhapsody subscription can download it and have a listen, or possibly find it on the web somewhere.

Heck, if all else fails, I'll learn it and play my own version to share...(but bear in mind, that's kind of a consolation prize )!.

Darn it! mad

This is a copy of the Hess version published in 1926 so it should be OK to post now if I understand the copyright rules correctly.

Edit: Link removed. Myra Hess died in 1965 so I'm not sure of the status.

Looks like it's copyrighted http://imslp.org/wiki/Public_domain
