Where are you? What's the experience of the teacher? Those are a couple of the main determining factors.

Agreed, depends on where you are. Seems a little high for my area, I pay $40 for an hour, which is pretty normal here.

Wow, you guys are, like, China.
Down here, $90 an hour is not seldom. Of course, you get a world class teacher for that.

PS: on the other end of the spectrum, you can get 1/2 hour rates of $0.38 (pro-rated for a 1.5 hour class, twice a week, for 16 weeks, and $36 TOTAL cost. That's your community college.

I pay $50 an hour - the teacher comes to my house. Her rate otherwise would be $40. It's worth the convenience of playing on my own (crappy) piano.

In NYC the cost of lessons are expensive. I pay $60 an hour - but some teachers charge $100 an hour - the cost of lessons seem to be all over the map. I've heard that some teachers charge more than $100 per hour.

I don't know what a 1/2 hour lessons would cost, never really looked into it. Some colleges give group lessons (limited to 6 students in some cases), I think it's $360-400 for the semester. It may be a little higher. Group lessons really have no appeal for me. Something for everyone.

Here in Northern Virginia (Washington, D.C. suburbs) I have paid $21 per half hour or $84 a month. I got another quote for $25 per half hour from another place.

I'm in Vancouver, Canada. Here i pay $50 for a 1 hour lesson (usually ends up as an hour and fifteen). Some teachers charge less around 35 an hour. (this is in CDN dollars btw)

I think it really depends on how qualified your teacher is. A univeristy music prof will be more expensive than a recently graduated undergrad with a music degree.

I pay $10 per half-hour lesson. I'm not getting a poor teacher for that fee, either.

My teacher is a very good piano teacher, with a Master's from Oberlin College. She is very elderly, and I suspect she is teaching a very light schedule at this time. Sort of in the pre-retirement mode.

I don't believe I would want a very excellent teacher at high prices, because I mainly want someone to listen to whatI play so as to check that I am playing the material right.

And a little coaching is welcome, also.

My teacher told me she doesn't like to schedule less than 45 minutes for adult students, she feels half an hour is too short. Children, depending on the age, are a different matter. Most don't stay interested for more than 30 minutes. Of course a lot depends on your schedule and finances. I suspect half an hour is better than nothing! But sometimes even an hour seems too short.

My teacher's lessons were close to 2hrs for the first few, probably because of the sheer variety of self-taught bad habits that needed correcting. Lately we've been going about 1.5 hrs each time. Just as most kids run out of gas after 30 minutes, I'm sure that after an hour and a half my demeanor says "no mas."

$12 here a half hour here in midwest "Podunk". I'm sure in the city they would be much more. I really like my piano teacher too.

My son's lesson currently costs $24 for a 45 minute session. There is no lack of teachers here in my small community, so perhaps that is one reason the rate is still reasonable.

Another Podunk-er checking in here...I pay $15.00 per half-hour - up from $12.00 last year. And she's a gem with more patience than degrees, of which she has several, as well. Liz

Lizzy, I live in Washington County (just past Jefferson), do you mind sharing where you are in Missouri?

Just being nosey, I see your "St.Louis" in your response.

mamma, I'm actually on the Illinois side of St. Louis, but since no one would recognize where it is, I always put St. Louis. I've been thru your area many times - very pretty part of the state there. I hear they have great piano teachers there, too. wink Liz
