My new neighbor is a composer and teaches at Juliard. He has asked me if I could start practicing at 12PM.

I've been taking lessons for almost six years now and usually start between 10:30-ll AM and have never had any problem in all this time.

Guess we are creatures of habit and this new start time has thrown me off. I use my Casis PX100 for scales, and sometimes go over music I'm working on - but the touch and sound is so different from my piano that it's tricky for me. I've been thinking of staring at 11AM and holding the pedal that dampens the sound down.

He is a nice person and was polite about his request and mentioned that he like my Bach (Invention No.4). I should add that I live in a prewar building and that the apartments are close to one another.

What to do, any suggestions? Thanks for wading through this.

Hm, that's a tough one. Having lived in NYC apartments for two decades, I am sympathetic to both sides. But 12pm is a little silly. I mean, what the heck does he expect, the whole world to just bend over for his little habits? It is not really reasonable to expect someone to refrain from playing piano in the middle of a day.

Here's my thinking -- tell him you tried, and it just isn't working for you. Tell him you might be able to do it a little easier if you had a really good digital (like a high-end Yamaha or Kawai). Maybe he'll buy it for you. smile
