Hey all,

I'm 16 and turning 17 in January I'm completely new to Piano. I have no music background or anything. I decided to learn because I want to learn to play an instrument and I nothing better to do for the 10 weeks holiday

I got a Casio CTK-551 keyboard and I hate it hopefully my parents will get me a yamaha p70 for Christmas or birthday.

Anyway... At the moment I'm reading the stuff from pianonanny.com . Anyone else used this website before? I'm also using musictheory.net's note trainer. It's pretty good I guess.

It would be a good idea to get Alfred's Adult All-In-One, I think. It moves along quite quickly and has everything you need for a good basic skill set you can build on.

I can understand why you want a p70. The CTK-551 is an entry level synch with limited poly and few voices. It is designed to be a controller with limited stand-alone features.

Here's hoping your Christmas wish happens for ya.

As far as the on-line beginner's course, I have no advice either way, as I am not familiar with it. The concept of learning this way is as valid as any other, IMHO.

But, for me, I am "old-school". I like books. I enjoy reading pieces away from both keyboards. For me, I want the lessons in book form. To each his/her own.

Here's hoping for a great Christmas keyboard for you!

Alfred's All-In-One is a good choice. I also really like the Faber & Faber Adult Piano Adventures series. Both the Alfred's and the Faber come with CD's so you can hear what you're practicing toward. I like the music better in the Faber books, I find it more interesting!

There are lots of free piano piano lessons on YouTube, too. Any chance you could get some piano lessons for the new year? A teacher can get you started on the right foot! OK, had to say it. I'm a teacher, after all!

Welcome to the forum, Zanarkand. There's a bunch of good video game music out there, and a lot of it is nowhere near as hard as "To Zanarkand." Search the archives for "video game," "Final Fantasy," and "anime" and you'll find some good threads with links to sheet music sites.

The best way to find a teacher is word of mouth. Do you know anybody in your city who is taking lessons?
