Oh, my, Greg! I am so very glad you are ok- relatively speaking. I'm sure the recovery process will not be fun for a while, but, as you say, it could have been much, much worse! I am just thankful it was not. Prayers for a speedy recovery from NH.

Greg, Also hoping you feel better soon and heal completely. Even when we're knowledgeable and careful, things can still go wrong (horses for me).

Ai yai yai. I can't say the hospital is the most beautiful scenery in Santa Fe, but I'm glad it's got medical care that took good care of you. I've had close calls with black cattle on the road at night in the open range around here, and even walking over cattle guards for a human can twist ankles - what a scary experience. I'm so glad you're still with us. We want you around for a long time.

Hey Greg,
Hope you pull thru this completely and are able to pursue your passions... all of them.
My lower back (spinal-stenosis) forced me to opt out a few years ago to an ultra-safe bike. Most people call it a Schwinn Air-dyne : ). Sometimes I call it various other things, plus the scenery's the pits.
Be safe, my friend....

Oh my. Greg, I am *so sorry* this happened, and thank God you were not paralyzed. Each and every one of us walks around under a sword of Damocles that we pretend is not there. Life and health is so fragile. Your experience is a great reminder to all of us to be grateful for our time here. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

C7 had a bad encounter with C1 and C2 - Ouch. OK a very bad joke to put a smile on your face, I hope.
Seriously I am very glad you are alright, despite the horrible neck brace and face lacerations. Your lucky star was watching over you. I can relate to such freak accidents. My husband had a near fatal ski accident some years ago and was in the ICU for a month, drugged out to manage the pain. Another friend had a C1 problem and had months of bad symptoms.
I wish you a very speedy recovery. Sending healing thoughts your way.

Thanks to all of you for your good wishes and support. Believe me, I realize how lucky I am to have escaped without a much more serious injury. Having said that, life certainly isn't going to be a lot of fun for a very long time. For those unfamiliar with cattle guards or confused by my description of the accident, here's an example (note that this isn't the "scene of the crime"). See the long metal strip that the crude black arrow points to that runs in the direction of traffic flow? On the cattle guard I went over, that strip was missing. The guard itself is made in sections that are put in place and then the strip that is missing is welded in place to cover the seam. The two plates were joined tightly together at the leading edge of the guard where I was crossing it but were separated at the far side. As I approached the guard, I looked and didn't see any gaps so I assumed it was safe but I didn't look all the way across to the other side of the guard. Once I got into that seam, there was pretty much no escape. With benefit of hindsight, I was lucky in a number of ways. Obviously lucky not to have fractured the C1/C2 worse than I did and sever the spinal cord. Luck that the friendly old gentleman who gave us directions to the hospital and pounded me on the shoulders several times wishing me "good luck" didn't sever it, lucky that the hospital I went to eventually did decide to check for spinal trauma after letting me walk down to xray a couple of times on my own, etc. Any one of those events could easily have been the end. Once again, thanks to all for your good wishes. We have a tenuous hold on this life so take advantage of this opportunity to let those around you know you love them and to play the piano!
Greg

Greg: I share the same sentiments as others and wish you a speedy recovery, but seriously, how about you and me get together when your all better and blow up that freakin cattle guard to the moon!. It'll be a lot of fun. You, me, some close friends and a box of M-80's. Maybe then the forrest service will get "the hint" and pay closer attention to safety for ALL of the roads users!. Just kidding, sort of, well maybe not. Anyway, get better soon.

Oh Greg!!
When I read this thread title, I knew in an instant you had had a cycling accident. I remembered the last time you mentioned cycling to me, it was some days-long event that sounded very intense to me. I was afraid to even open this thread for a second.
I'm so sorry to hear this, but also so relieved to hear that it wasn't any worse. I hope the rest of your recovery goes smoothly. I'm sending my thoughts your way for comfort and healing!!

Sorry to hear 'bout your accident. My neighbor just returned from a bike trip out that way, through Bryce Pass and such... will ask tonight what trip he was on...you two may have crossed paths... he showed us a towel with the route on it...ring a bell?
Here's to hoping your recovery is fast and complete.
btw if you and SH need any donations to that "get together" ... let us know.

Hi M&H,
My trip wasn't an "organized" tour, rather just a group of friends getting together and riding routes of our own choosing. No towel with a route on it here!
Thanks again all for the positive thoughts and good wishes.
Greg

What a frightening experience. Thank God you survived. Plastic surgeons can do wonders in repairing damaged faces. And, from what I am reading on the various posts here, neurosurgeons can perform miracles with neck and spine fractures.
I wish you a speedy recovery. Keep us posted on how things progress. Gaby Tu

Greg, I must have missed this just after it happened. I am so sorry about all you've been through. Are you feeling any better? Back to work at all? Your injuries sound very serious, and it makes me shudder to think what would happen if you had been going much faster.
Take care of yourself and let us hear how you're healing.

Gee; I just noticed this thread; Greg: my deepest sympathies to you and your wife (I am sure it was just as hard on her as it was on you); hope you have a speedy recovery!
