PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD! USE THE DISCUSSION THREAD(S).

I am delighted to introduce our 12th quarterly Adult Beginners' Forum Recital. So, pull up a chair and have a listen.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask the audience to please refrain from commentary in this recital room.

A separate room has been provided for the purposes of intermezzo discussion. Please take any and all comments to the General Discussion Room and all critical discussion to the Critical Discussion Room.

Thank you.

A template has been created for those who wish to provide individualized feedback:

Response Template

In addition to the zip files linked below, mahlzeit has added a feature to his program that creates an online streaming player. Just click on the link to hear all the recital pieces without having to download the zip files:

Online Streaming Player

For the convenience of forum members, mahlzeit's program has normalized the files for consistent volume and standardized the ID3 tags in a collection of zip files. This makes it easier to create personal CDs and playlists.

These zip files have been posted at the following URLs:

Zip File 1
Zip File 2
Zip File 3
Zip File 4
Zip File 5
Zip File 6
Zip File 7
Zip File 8
Zip File 9

The zip files, along with past recitals, have also been uploaded to:

http://www.esnips.com/web/PWRecitals

Let me express my greatest thanks to five very special people: mr_super-hunky for coming up with the idea of our online recitals, which have proven to be more successful than any of us ever dreamed; Bob Muir for working out the technical details of pulling together the recital and doing so tirelessly for the first six, count 'em, six, recitals; LaValse for hosting the zip files and recital software on his server; Copper for also hosting the zip files and trouble-shooting help; and last but not least, mahlzeit for writing the absolutely fantastic web-based recital program that we are using. THANK YOU MAHLZEIT!!!

AGAIN: DO NOT REPLY OR POST ON THIS THREAD!!

The main difficulties in this Nocturne are the many twos against threes, some of which I played nicely wink
and the very pretty run of ten against six at 3:08.
You can download the score at:
http://www.piano.ru/glinka.html
(the sixth link: Íîêòþðí)
The Nocturne seems to speak of love and gentleness and beauty.
I hope you like it. </td></tr></tbody></table>

*Magicland* is a compolation album I am putting together (self recorded cd) that I want to create to serve as a benchmark of my playing abilites as well as a cheap x-mas gift.

When I record a final version of this piece,(this one is still a bit rough as it's not finished yet), I will do it on the big acoustic grand which sounds so cool.

Until then, I hope you enjoy this one. </td></tr></tbody></table>

All the better to get my playing critically evaluated, since everyone is familiar with it. After all, isn’t that what the Adult Beginner’s Form Recital is all about?

This piece is my greatest accomplishment so far. Thank you to Monica K and bluekeys for inspiring me to learn it. This is living proof that PianoWorld recitals are beneficial. It wasn’t as easy as you said, bluekeys, and for a while I was mad at you because of it, but I finally learned it and now we’re friends again. Thanks for your encouragement.

During the past three months I have experienced my greatest gains ever on the piano, partly because of the following two experiences:

1 - I completed a workshop in fear anxiety. The result is that I have successfully performed this same piece in front of an audience of ten people. This is tremendous progress for me since only three months ago I could not play even simpler music for a single person due to my nervousness.

2 - I now have a piano teacher. The progress I have made in suppressing my performance anxiety has allowed me to play comfortably in front of a teacher. But I admit that this is not just any piano teacher. She is very patient, seems genuinely sensitive to my nervousness, and in our short time together we have made real progress. I suspect Betty Patnude will be pleased. And Betty, I know you won’t believe this but this teacher claims that I’m not a difficult student to deal with at all. Isn’t that amazing? </td></tr></tbody></table>

"Hava Nagila" translates to "Let Us Rejoice" and is a song of celebration heard everywhere: weddings, bar mitzvahs, festivals, harvests, etc. - perhaps even at divorces and funerals! It is almost always danced to in swirling, interweaving, highly synchronized (and very energetic) movements that simply radiate sheer joy and exuberance.

I had an infrequent struggle with the infamous and dreaded red dot on this one - got very frustrated - said the heck with it - went for it one last time and here's the result: lacking in polish and finese but overflowing with enthuisiasm and "hutsva" (sp.?). This is probably the 2nd most fun I've ever had while sitting down.

Regards and enjoy, JF - and Hava Nagila! - or as the very old, stale joke goes: have two Nagilas! Mazel Tov. </td></tr></tbody></table>

One of our older sets included this rag, but we didn't really, as a group, get it back up to speed. So, anticipating that we'd need it anyway, I revived it as a piano rag, like we had played it a couple of years ago. I made up enough variations of the first rag to be able to play it 6 times thru, and then did 4 variations of Stone's, and the fiddles did a couple. We ended up not using the set for a contra, but used the other rag, slowed down and swung, for an impromptu swing workshop, and this one, slowed down, for a choreographed shottish workshop laugh So it all payed off. And - I got a recital piece thrown in, sort of free. For a week after the camp my fingers were rubber, and they're really not quite back yet, and I'm pretty burnt out on this, but here it is, 4 variations at 116, sort of. Pretend like you're contra dancing, and there are also guitars, mandolins, and bodhrans going, and you won't hear the mistakes laugh

This also shows my beginning attempts to be able to improvise. None of this is actually improvised - it's all carefully rehearsed bits that I can mix and match. But I find, if I'm playing it a lot, that the mix and match comes at non-planned times, so it's varied subconsciously, or maybe unconsciously. So my hope is that maybe someday I'll have enough variations inside me that I can actually begin, at slower speeds, to be able to alter things on the fly. It's a thought - </td></tr></tbody></table>

Guess what happens when you finally manage to beat the red dot syndrome and play your piece almost to your liking? I had to chose between these two interesting versions - so here goes Robert Schumann featuring Galileo and Pythagoras with a squeaking improvised vocal accompaniment towards the end of the piece. </td></tr></tbody></table>

So I ended up cramming to get this final selection in some sort of shape for the recital. I know it was just played in the previous recital, but I was out of options.

I truly love this piece and hope to someday be able tackle the full, unadulterated, score. </td></tr></tbody></table>

Also I HATE the Celine Dion version of this! Yuck! </td></tr></tbody></table>

The waves of emotion that are played in the left hand sound to me like the reflections of a soulful expression. The right hand played has been thought by some to sound like tolling bells. Hopefully, I'm not abusing the ABF recital rules or your ears too much by squeezing two movements of this Sonatina into one ABF recital submission. After missing the deadline for the August recital, I definitely wanted to submit for this one.

I've been playing the first movement of this Sonatina since the spring and finished it at lessons in June, but I still keep playing it while I work on the second and third movements. Unfortunately, parts are still a little murky and troublesome areas still crop up when I play it and I never know where they'll strike. Movement II I'll be playing at my November recital framed by two other pieces (a Bach Prelude and a Grieg Waltz).

Unfortunately, red dot time has been scarce lately and getting in one session was the best I could do. In this recording, I edited out two errors in movement I. Usually, I'd have various children talking or crying in the background. For this one, I recorded while they were taking a walk, but this time I had plumbers working in the house (see movement 2)! Sorry! smile </td></tr></tbody></table>

I have been out of practice for about a month due to unexpected circumstances and this week I have had a horrible cough. I also discovered that since my computer crashed a little bit ago, I no longer had the proper recording programs so I had to download them again. Nevertheless, I did submit and it is not perfect and in time I will try to make it faster. It looks like most of the pieces are a bit more mellow, so this piece will definitely be a bit of a switch for the audience. Enjoy. </td></tr></tbody></table>

So I went and pulled these two from Alfred three. Spooky Story fits because of Halloween and American Hymn because I really enjoyed that one.

It was very tough going from the new acoustic piano back to the digital, so it didn't come out 100% the way I would of liked, but I did want to add my two cents.

Thanks for listening... </td></tr></tbody></table>

I got back to music again in September 2006 because my children began taking lessons on a keyboard Yamaha 303 – a toy. In July 2007 I bought DP Roland FP-7 and it started again... I’m sure many of you know the mechanism smile .
On the piano I’m completely self-taught. I can play from sheet music and by ear. I have learned this tune playing only by ear - my way. I play EVERYTHING my way smile . That’s why if I have to play from sheet music I prefer lead sheets. They gave freedom I need smile .
What kind of music do I want to play? Known standards in the style between jazz and so called cocktail piano, you know, beautiful melody and jazzy chords. How far away am I from that goal? Please, tell me! smile
I’m aware that my performance is far from perfect but I’m just an Adult Beginner... </td></tr></tbody></table>

I've been at it for a couple of months and this is, I'm afraid, as good as it's going to get. Still too slow in the D major section in the middle. A few notes that don't sound (although I'm quite sure I hit them!!) I think the ones that do sound are correct!! I only want positive feedback (lie if you have to) :-)) because my teacher picks this one apart each week. </td></tr></tbody></table>

This very recording, in fact (my mp3 is just the sound of the video).

A trip through the French countryside. In this piece, Ravel takes the listener through pentatonic, chromatic and diatonic melodies, peppered with his trademark major and minor seventh chords all along with the way, all in three charming minutes, and all grounded on the simple, pleasant pentatonic melody that opens the piece (At 0.03 and 0:44). Listen for those sublime climaxes at 0;41, 1;23 and 2;36.

I kind of butcher it a few times, and I really screwed up the very end (the "trill" type part) which should sound much more haunting than the noise I produce to finish the piece.

It's a bit quiet, turn the sound up. </td></tr></tbody></table>
