Does anyone know anything about Theodore Oesten? The piece I'm working on for the recital is from a book of "classical masterpieces" and is titled "Dolly's Dreamtime Awakening" by him. When several musical friends had never heard of this song, I started trying to find some information. Googling doesn't turn up much. I work for a major university and our music library only has one listing for Oesten and it's for a composition book with an 1868 copyright that isn't allowed to leave the library. Other than that, little blurbs in musical dictionaries are about it. I now think that the song I'm playing may be a medley of several of his songs-Cradle Song, Doll's Dream, and maybe one other. confused

Never heard of him...and then I typed his name into Rhapsody (the online music service I subscribe to), and it came up empty.

So now you've got me curious! I'll be looking forward to hearing your piece. smile

Well, a lot of listings come up on Google but I found precious little information. I did find the music I'm playing on a British website for 9 pounds. smile

This rather odd site has some biographical information from an old Grove Dictionary.

I know that piece! It's one of the 50 pre-recorded songs in my Clavinova's song bank, but the title listed is "Dolly's Dreaming and Awakening". I also found the piece in a sheet music book I have, Piano Pieces for Children (Everybody's Favorite Series No.3) and the title here is "Doll's Dream". It's 3 pages long and has 3 parts: Cradle Song (andante con moto), The Doll's Dream (moderato) and The Doll Wakes / Dances (allegretto moderato). It's by Theodore Oesten (1813-1870) and it's listed as a Grade III piece. Someone played it at a recital I was in some months ago, and it was very pretty to listen to! smile

Hi, itís interesting to know that someone else plays this piece. Likewise I did play the beautiful Dolls Dream, a while ago however I have not memorized it yet. I am an adult beginner; I have been taking lessons for over 2 years now. Iím curious to see Theodore Oesten other works.

PICK ME! PICK ME! PICK ME! My teacher gave me "Dolly's Dreaming and Awakening" to play, and at the time, I hated it. The first part was too boring, the second part was too repetitive, and the third part was too hard. However, recently, I picked it up and I'm actually able to play it. It's really pretty--one of my favorites. Maybe I'll record it and post it for the February 15 recital =).

Thank you all for your comments. It's particularly good to know the level of the piece (Grade III). It's been so many years since I've played that I really have no idea what level I'm starting on and what to play. I picked this piece because it seemed to be the easiest one in the book that I have.

There is another piece that you might have it in your book "The Swan" by C.Faint - Sean its a very pretty and slow peice about the same level. Sometimes the levels are not the same, a level 3 piece its much more difficult than another level 3 piece.. Dolls Dream its good choice for your recital.
