This weekend I'll be performing the solo viola in Vaughan-Williams' Flos Campi. I don't stand in the solo spot too often--I'm usually more of a supporting player. We had a run-through last weekend and it went pretty well, but I'm still a little nervous! Mostly because there a lot of places where I can't tell where the beat is by listening. It's a good thing I'm standing directly in front of the conductor! It's a beautiful piece. Very mysterious and a little exotic, with lots of diminished fourths and fifths (intonation nightmare!). The movements are headed by quotes from the Song of Solomon. If you're interested, you can take a peek here .

Thanks for your well-wishes! The performance went pretty well, and I enjoyed it. There were some parts that I wanted a do-over: I think I dropped a beat somewhere, reached the top of the phrase, and remember thinking, "Where is everyone?" Luckily, that spot is particularly amorphous, and I was able to back with the group. One of the cellists said he didn't notice. Overall I had fun! I'm so glad they asked me; I never thought I'd get a chance to play this piece. Though there's nothing like that feeling in your stomach when you realize that you're about to go on, is there? I was thinking about this in the context of our on-line recital, and the nerves associated with recording and performing. I really feel it's a problem of not doing it often enough. If you had opportunities to perform the same piece several times, it would become much easier. It will be nice to think about other things. I've been obsessing about this for the past 2 months!

First- congrats! Glad to hear it went well! Nothing like that feeling of relief when someone else says they didn't notice the spots where you KNOW you messed up, is there? Well, I don't know- I sang for 18 years with an adult chorale and paced *incessantly* right before every performance, to help keep the jitters under control! So I guess, in some respect, it never gets better- you just get used to it!

Sorry didn't realize I missed this from last week. Glad everything went ok and I know exactly what you mean on the feeling in the stomach and I'm sure hoping it gets better the more public time you get.

Actually, I'm a pretty good pacer, too. Thanks again, everyone. Rocky, it wasn't recorded. But that's a great excuse to do it again sometime!
