Singing Tone (Edna Golandsky)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IhKh71hIn2c&feature=related

Transcript from 2:45 (near the end of demonstration):

"The slowing into the key is so minute that it does not effect the speed. Speed is how you move quickly from note to note. The speed of the key has no bearing on the overall speed. It is a tiny difference between doing this... and doing this... the key's distance from where it starts to the bottom is very very small...so don't get stuck on the word slow... it's slower than this... but the slowing of it is so little that you can do anything, you can sing ... you can go very slow into the key for soft, it's a little bit less weight, and still go quickly, so it has no bearing the slowing down of... It's two distinct directions."

Very interesting and helpful but I'm so far from that, I'm still struggling with the basic.

“Being able to hear recorded music freed up loads of musicians that couldn't necessarily afford to learn to read or write music. With recording, it was emancipation for the people.”

The 'hard' sound's fine. It's louder, that's all. Secret?? More 'Emperors New Clothes' if you ask me.

A good question for those who get involved in DP vs acoustic debates - Can you play 'hard' on a DP?

snobbyish, yet maybe helpful.

I've been playing some basic Grade 1 pieces that sound beautiful!

I disagree with all of this. This thing
about "The slowing into the key...It's
too distinct directions." turns piano
playing into something that's too complicated
to be practical. Moreover, it's not
even valid, in my opinion.

And you shouldn't be using or rotating
your wrist or arm as inherent part of
your playing motion, in my opinion.
This overly complicates the playing
motion, which is difficult enough
with just finger/hand motion. As the
pieces get longer and more difficult,
an overly complicated playing motion
will eventually stymie you completely.

This is why in the 17th to 19th centuries
students were taught to play with a coin
on the back of each hand. This gets you
playing primarily with finger and hand
motion and with limited use of other
parts of the body. This is the simplest
and most efficient way to play. Those
who would riducule this old method of
playing should note that Bach, Mozart,
Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, etc. were
all taught to play like this.

I also posted on this thread in the Pianist Corner:

These are great. Anyone have any other recommendations for substantive content like this?

I've watched a lot of these.
Andrew Furmanczyk\'s Piano Lessons
There are some good things here, but the audio isn't always that great and you have to be able to deal with the style of the teacher. They are also somewhat simple at times, but right on the money for ABF types in other episodes.
